Dear Friends

As one grows older everything takes more time and the results are less accurate - so firstly, I am sorry I am late and secondly I hope I included all the defs

Here are 14 defs for PALLADIUM please vote for 2 of them or declare yourself a DQ if you now know it (but don't look it up until after you have voted)

Vote Deadline: 10:00 BST Monday morning

1                            a temple to Pallas Athena, then (under the Romans) to Minerva

2                            (also hippodrome) a Roman arena used for dramatic and other performances, such as the one restored at Caesarea

3                            Brit. a vaudeville theater

4                            the calm weather that may precede a storm

5                            an ornate sacramental table used in temples to hold offerings to a deity, often for the purpose of ritual blessing

6                            the flattened tip of a hypha in various species of parasitic fungi from which a filament emerges that penetrates the host's tissues

7                            a thing on which the safety of a nation, institution, privilege, etc., is believed to depend; a source of protection, a safeguard

8                            an entranceway to a theatre

9                            a commemorative arch, often stand-alone

10                            the place from which a jury is drawn and in which trial is held

11                            in Roman times, a room for entertaining guests

12                            a piece of land containing a sacred grove of trees

13              a toga bordered in purple, worn by Roman senators during the time of the Caesars. The dye used, know as Tyrean purple, was made from the crushed shells of certain sea snails, and was quite rare and expensive. Julius Caesar was reputed to have worn a toga dyed entirely in purple, whence the term "royal purple"

14                            a dam constructed of concrete and/or masonry on the outside but having a hollow interior filled with unshaped or uncoursed stones or rubble

As I told John when I submitted my def, I'm finding it impossible to get images of elements or London theatres out of my mind, but I'll vote for 5 and 7.

5              an ornate sacramental table used in temples to hold offerings to a deity, often for the purpose of ritual blessing

7              a thing on which the safety of a nation, institution, privilege, etc., is believed to depend; a source of protection, a safeguard
