I was hesitant initially to step up, but then we found out Glenn was sick. By then I had gone on to other things, but I was the author of #7. So let's get the new round going and Glenn can fill us in later when he's feeling better.

I am giving a generous submission period as Sundays are busy for me, so please submit a definition to me by 6 pm Eastern time, Sunday, January 18: chowwoman at gmail dot com. I prefer individual emails sent to me rather than replying to this thread causing me to sometimes miss a submission.

If you don't get a prompt acknowledgement from me, please publicly announce it. If a submission goes elsewhere and you don't say anything, it's on you. :(

Have I missed anything? Any DQs?

Good Saturday to you all,

D,

All,

We can score Round 2614 and leave Glenn in peace to get well. All we need are the names of the submitters. Please go to this scoring spreadsheet and open the Voting tab. Locate the number of your definition in column A “Def no”. Then in the corresponding row of column B “Submitter”, choose your name from the drop-down list in the cell. Then check that your votes have been correctly recorded in column P “Voted for”. If they have not been, I think you'll be able to guess how to fix it.

That's it. The Ranking Report tab will report on the data it has, but obviously it will not be correct until it has all of the submitter names.

If you didn't submit a definition then you need take no action.

That's genius, but you're going to have to help me edit. I voted for the correct definition also.

Excellent work! I had to download the Google Sheets app before I could edit the sheet, but - apart from the usual problems caused by having more than one Google account - after that it worked well. All you need to do now is create a bot that selects and announces a new word, and none of us will have to do dealer duty ever again!

Excuse me, I was looking at the numbers wrong. I did not vote for the correct definition, and now that I'm on my desktop, I see everything clearly.

The correct definition is 9: OED3 defines singult as ‘a sob’ but older dictionaries have ‘sigh’. It’s a borrowing from Latin singultus, which apparently could mean either.

I have you voting for 10 and 15 in a post of Wednesday 14, 21h34 UTC. But I think you are looking at the spreadsheet row number. You should be looking instead at column A with the heading “Def no”, which has the definition numbers in emphatic black type: 10 and 15 .

Yes, I finally figured that out on the larger screen and corrected it. There are some things I can't do on a cell phone.

I can, just about, make that spreadsheet do what I want on my phone. But I wrote it, and have had the time to get used to using it on my phone. Making it do what I want is fiddly, no question, so I quite understand.

Thanks Johnny. I can put it in.

But don't feel bad because you can't save changes to a Google Sheet to file. None of us can do that. There is no save-to-file mechanism, because there are no files. Any change you make is immediate.

Johnny, your votes for 5 and 7 are in the sheet. But you can't also have been DQ. Unless you DQd and then changed your mind after seeing the list. Then by voting you implicitly countermanded your DQ. You would not be the only one to have done that.

And those changes stay even when we exit? I've assumed so, so let me know if that's not the case.

Yes, they stay. As long as you continue in the same session you can revert with the back button without limit. Go away and come back, and you will find the back button greyed out, except for new changes.

BUT: You can go back to, and restore, a dated previous version with File | Version history. That even tells you who was to blame for unexpected changes you dislike!
