Folks,

Fourteen definitions of GULLY-SHOOTING  follow. One, believe it or not, is correct. (Really.) The rest are products of your imaginative minds. They have been edited slightly for format consistency and are in ascending order by character count. That might not correspond to visual length in your email display font.

Variants include gully-shooting without watercraft and gully-shooting with the object of crossing the stream or river that the gully feeds into. Also popular in New England, where it is known as a vale-run.

From my memories of my grandparents' square-dancing club (which stands today), I think it's rather more likely to have been formed as SHOOT-THE-GULLY or GULLY-SHOOT (and likely almost never referred to as GULLY-SHOOTING), but I can imagine a move similar to a promenade where the couple moves through the unit (instead of around) whilst doing the move described above, and I can also imagine that move migrating from square dance to line dance fairly easily.

And I've just about talked myself out of my decision, so I'd better vote.
