Folks,

The nombril is "the point on an escutcheon midway between the fesse point and the base," definition 8. In the diagram below, E is the fesse (or fess) point and F is the nombril. (It is also French for "navel," which could have provided a clue but apparently didn't.) John Barrs, to nobody's surprise, knew the word and disqualified himself from voting. Nobody else got it.

Ryan McGill (a child's nickname) and Chris Carson (an architectural ornament in the shape of a sculptured flower basket) led the voters with natural 3s. Ryan is (only slightly, but still) ahead of Chris in the rolling scores, so the deal bounces back to him. Chris is the traditional "winnah."

I was conflicted about combining definitions 1 and 2 (the nicknames). I decided not to, feeling that any combined definition would inevitably take essential information away from, or add significant information to, one of them. I expected several people to vote for that pair on the grounds that they would have been combined had one of them not been real, but Mike Shefler was the only player who did.

Full results:

1. a nickname. From Lodge, T. who voted 2, 14. Voted for by: Shefler, M. Score: 1.

2. a nickname, especially for a child. From McGill, R. who voted 4, 11. Voted for by: Lodge, T.; Shefler, M.; Bourne, T. Score: 3.

3. a palomino pony with bushy white eyelashes. From Barrs, J. who was DQ. Voted for by: None. Score: 0.

4. the pole-like dorsal appendage of a female Angler fish. From Dixon, S. who voted 5, 6. Voted for by: McGill, R.; Widdis, D. Score: 2.

5. a type of adze with a curved blade used in boat-building. From Shefler, M. who voted 1, 2. Voted for by: Dixon, S. Score: 1.

6. a sculptured basket of flowers used as an architectural ornament. From Carson, C. who did not vote. Voted for by: Dixon, S.; Embler, D.; Naylor, S. Score: 3.

7. an open cart with hinged sides for easy side loading and unloading. From Bourne, T. who voted 2, 9. Voted for by: Madnick, J. Score: 1.

8. the point on an escutcheon midway between the fesse point and the base. From Dictionary which could not vote. Voted for by: None. Score: D0.

9. a two-wheeled cart, especially a farmer's cart, that can be tilted to dump a load. From Madnick, J. who voted 7, 12. Voted for by: Bourne, T.; Widdis, D. Score: 2.

10. a plant of the Ranunculaceae family native to Eurasia and bearing white or yellow flowers. From Evans, B. who did not vote. Voted for by: Naylor, S. Score: 1.

11. a slender stalk between two structures, especially that between the abdomen and thorax of a wasp or ant. From Embler, D. who voted 6, 13. Voted for by: McGill, R. Score: 1.

12. a horizontal band, as of stone, projecting beyond or flush with the face of a building, often molded and sometimes richly carved.  From Naylor, S. who voted 6, 10. Voted for by: Madnick, J. Score: 1.

13. a small edible European wild mushroom (Agaricus bisporus) which induces drowsiness and a mild trance-like state when used in moderation; can lead to coma. From Shepherdson, N. who did not vote. Voted for by: Embler, D. Score: 1.

14. 1. What strikes the eye vividly and pleasantly with luxury, pomp, magnificence; 2. What is very remarkable in its genre or which strikes and grabs the mind, the imagination; 3. (Horse riding) of a horse in a race, impetuous, going, which has the neck raised, which pulls, which goes faster than its rider would like. From Widdis, D. who voted 4, 9. Voted for by: Lodge, T. Score: 1.

For those who prefer tables results follow in that form, in descending order of scores without regard for tie-breaking precedence rules.

Congrats on the D0!

For some reason, I don't see the scores listed anywhere on the forum. Given my tally and the rolling scores, am I right in surmising that the deal is back to me?

If so, you can expect a new word in about 6 hours. I've just got back to the office after they treated us all to Rise of Skywalker, and I have to turn in another 3/4 of a day's work before I get more play time.

Rx.

Yes, that’s right - but, more importantly, what did you think of the movie?
