Paul was spot on when he said this word "looks made-up, like a trademark". Tricouni is a brand of metal nail used on mountain climbing shoes. According to Wikipedia, it was named after Félix-Valentin Genecand, alias "Tricouni" (1878–1957), a Geneva jeweller who was a keen alpinist and who had some peaks named after him (one in Antarctica, one in Canada - I supposed by the 20th century, all the peaks in Switzerland were already named).

Congrats Debbie!  I was worried I'd get the deal so relieved to not have it. :)

Interesting commentary about mountains in Antarctica.  I seldom think of that continent as being mountainous, but it obviously is!

In New Zealand we have more reason than most to know about mountains in Antarctica. Air NZ used to fly sightseeing flights down to the ice, until there was a crash on Mt Erebus in 1979  with all lives lost. I remember hearing on the TV that the flight was missing.

Nowadays I believe artificial soles give better grip, but I remember being taken rock-climbing on a school trip to Snowdonia about 1958 and being given boots with tricounis fitted round the edges.
