Shani Naylor is the next dealer. Congratulations! Actually, I won because I was a D6, and Nancy Shepherdson and Shani Naylor had only five points each. LOL! I was hoping that the definition was different enough from all the other ones that it would garner very few votes. Oh, well. That's the way it goes. If there are any errors, please let me know.

I reckon Nancy was ahead of Shani in the rolling scores. Shani was ahead (10–9) in the 5-round rolling scores, not including this round. But Nancy was ahead (13–12) in the 5-round rolling scores, including this round, which is the one that counts.

It is has been a source of trouble from the earliest years of the game that the tie-break rules call for the dealer to use a 5-round rolling score that is not actually available until after the results are announced. That is why the rolling scores report also gives the 4-round rolling scores. That leaves off the oldest round (giving Shani: 7 and Nancy: 8), to which you can then add the scores of the current round, (giving Shani: 12 and Nancy: 13).  But since their scores in the current round are equal at 5 (otherwise there would be no tie to resolve) you can skip the last addition step and use the 4-round scores directly.

Requiring the 5-round rolling scores to include the current round’s results was clearly an oversight. The sole purpose of the rolling score is to resolve ties in the current round, and including the current round’s tied scores in it does not serve that purpose. But, mistaken or not, that is what the rule says.

Thanks Paul

Given that my word is too well known, I'll gracefully withdraw and hand the round over to Nancy (which suits me as I have a busy weekend planned).

Zambuk is officially off the table.

How nicely that worked out. Wish I had been that fortunate! 🙃

No need to ask. It's all explained briefly and plainly in The "Real" Rules. I had help from Dan in reducing the tie-break rules down to the essentials. To find: Google "Real Rules of Dixonary".

The rule says this:
Quote:
A player who has a higher 4-round rolling score (not including the results of the round being resolved) (emphasis mine) ranks higher.

I apologize for missing the point. I used the five-round total that doesn't include what was the current round (3661) and shows Shani with 10 points and Nancy with 9 points. The four-round total in the Round 3660 rolling scores (revised) eliminates the oldest round, not the current round. The current round isn't even included!

I don't mind using the four-round total, but I'm more apt to remember if I understand why!

The rolling scores after Round 3660 are compiled and published before Round 3661 is played, so there's no way they can include Round 3661 scores. Fortunately, if they need to be used to break a tie, all the tied players would have the same score in Round 3661 (that's what a tie is, after all) so that really doesn't matter. All we need to resolve a tie are the rolling scores for the four rounds just before it, and it gives those,

You were probably typing your message when I posted that I finally understand. Thanks for taking the time to explain further.
