Good morning!

Looks like I almost used a word (ZEMNI) that's on the lists generated by Dan Widdis but not on the list labeled "Used Word List." Perhaps the "Used Word List" should either be regularly updated or removed from the options. I've been relying on that one because it shows regular updates in the "Last Modified" column. What I didn't realize is that "Last Modified" refers to someone searching for a word!

Judy,

Here's a copy of my used words list, updated through the current round (which is about five rounds more than the online version). I'd post it, but I don't think I have permission and don't have time right now to get it. Maybe someone else will.

I appreciate that as well.

~Bending under the weight of His mercies~
The words of Zechariah the Prophet, “And I will pour out on the house of David and the inhabitants of Jerusalem a spirit of grace and supplication. They will look on Me, the One they have pierced, and they will mourn for Him as one mourns for an only child, and grieve bitterly for Him as one grieves for a firstborn son."

Oops! It is there! Perhaps my brain-finger-stroke connection wasn't working well when I checked. Thanks!

I prefer this sort of list as well, ordered alphabetically. If some kind person could put it online every 6 months, that would be great.

Shani, etc. -

Since it's an Excel spreadsheet, you can sort it on the Word column (Col. D) if you want an alphabetical list. You can also search (Windows: control-F, Mac: command-F) for a word you're thinking of dealing, though that runs the risk of missing different forms and variant spellings of the word.

There are a few places you can easily check.

  1. There is a tab on the Used Word spreadsheet where you can check for the existence of a word in a search, much like “Da Woid Checker” used to do.  It takes wildcards.
  2. As you noted if you sort the spreadsheet alphabetically you can look for it there.
  3. If you go to the Google Group online at https://groups.google.com/g/dixonary and put your word in the “search box” you can see if it was dealt anytime after we moved to the Google Group (April 2007, Round 2003).  This plus any of the old downloaded lists anytime past 2007 should work fine.

I do periodically update the text list sorted alphabetically. The latest one was updated April 23.

Old downloaded files aren't simply subsets of the current list, and so are not to be trusted. Last year I made several dozen fixes to the list where it didn't agree with the archived message store, and at least one fix this year. The fixes have included missing words, misspelt words, and incorrect round number and player attributions, spread over the the entire history of the game, right back to CompuServe days.

We lately had a round where a word that appeared in the current list was played, even though the dealer checked the list beforehand: but it was an old downloaded copy.

New word for Round 3258, barring too many DQs, is:  QAWWALI.
Capitalization is not significant. Do not look it up! Please create a fake definition and send that definition to
deborah dot fein at uconn dot edu
by Saturday 5 pm eastern time.
Please send DQ's ASAP - I have spares up my sleeve.

Hi, all. I have definitions from Sheffler, Keating, Madnick, Barrs, E. Mallach, Naylor, Widdis. If you sent me one and you are not listed here, please resend.
I will extend the deadline for 3 hours, until 8 pm Eastern time (NY time for us NY chauvinists).
Thanks! Deb Fein
