Folks,

Fourteen definitions of NOMBRIL  follow. One is correct; thirteen are your concoctions. They have been edited (very slightly) for format consistency and are in ascending order of character count, which might not correspond to visual length in your email display font. Please vote for two that you like for any reason by Replying to this message before the deadline that follows the list. If you realize that you know what NOMBRIL means, please tell me by private email: emallach <at> verizon <dot> net.

1. a nickname.

2. a nickname, especially for a child.

3. a palomino pony with bushy white eyelashes.

4. the pole-like dorsal appendage of a female Angler fish.

5. a type of adze with a curved blade used in boat-building.

6. a sculptured basket of flowers used as an architectural ornament.

7. an open cart with hinged sides for easy side loading and unloading.

8. the point on an escutcheon midway between the fesse point and the base.

9. a two-wheeled cart, especially a farmer's cart, that can be tilted to dump a load.

10. a plant of the Ranunculaceae family native to Eurasia and bearing white or yellow flowers.

11. a slender stalk between two structures, especially that between the abdomen and thorax of a wasp or ant.

12. a horizontal band, as of stone, projecting beyond or flush with the face of a building, often molded and sometimes richly carved.

13. a small edible European wild mushroom (Agaricus bisporus) which induces drowsiness and a mild trance-like state when used in moderation; can lead to coma.

14. 1. What strikes the eye vividly and pleasantly with luxury, pomp, magnificence; 2. What is very remarkable in its genre or which strikes and grabs the mind, the imagination; 3. (Horse riding) of a horse in a race, impetuous, going, which has the neck raised, which pulls, which goes faster than its rider would like.

Votes are due about 39 hours from now: Friday, Dec. 20, at noon US EST. According to timeanddate.com, that is:

and other times in other places. Please check any time conversion that applies to you. That site is good, but nobody's perfect, and time change season is approaching.

HOWEVER: I have a number of things on my schedule for Friday - some personal, some medical, yadda yadda. I picked a time when I hope to be free, but I may not get to preparing and posting the results right away. If it's past the deadline and you haven't voted, but you also haven't seen the results yet, go ahead and vote. I'll accept all votes that come in before I tabulate them, though votes that cross the results in cyberspace won't be counted.

New players are welcome to vote. Submitting a definition is not a requirement for voting; the only requirement is that you not know what this word means. Full rules at http://www.dixonary.net/game-rules-and-advice/rules .

Vote on!

The previous mailing had an old table for the voting deadlines. It has been replaced with the correct one here. There are no other changes.

It's unlikely to be 2 or 14, but I'll vote for them anyway.

  2. a nickname, especially for a child.

Well, since I'm stuck wanting to vote for everything and nothing simultaneously, I'll  just go with the two I find most conceptually linked to tendril, 4 & 11.

4. the pole-like dorsal appendage of a female Angler fish.
