Joseph,

Let me clarify a few things.

First, you're not the dealer for Round 3075. It isn't time for Round 3075 yet. That round won't begin until Round 3074 is over.

Second, the winner of a round deals the next round. Chris Carson won Round 3073, so he deals Round 3074. He has sent out the word; it's WITHY. If you want to submit a fake definition for WITHY, send it to clca...@live.com before the deadline, which is 6 am on Wednesday, May 20th in U.S EDT and perhaps a different time wher you are. There will then be a day or two for voting, in which you're also encouraged to participate. Chris will tabulate and announce the results when the voting period is over. Whoever wins Round 3074, and that could be you, will deal Round 3075 - but not until then, and we won't know who it is until then.

Third, it is impossible for someone who didn't participate in a round to become the next dealer, because the winner of a round is the player who scores the most points and you can't score points without playing. Since you didn't submit a fake definition or vote in Round 3073, you can't be the dealer now. If you want to deal, be sure to play. Sooner or later the dealing gods will smile on you and you'll get your chance.

In any case, keep "sporange." You may have a chance to use it soon. Just not quite yet.

Who knows - you might deal Round 3075 after all! We'll know by Friday, I'm sure.

That would be pretty crazy if it happened.

And it’s okay to be eager to deal the first time.  That shiny feeling doesn’t last after a dozen or so times “winning”. 😊

Thanks for catching this, John!

It was a typo on my part. Chris dealt WITHE to replace WILLIWAG back in Round 2738, so WITHE was on my mind. I replaced the E with the Y from WIFTY and got WITHY, which as far as I know isn't a word. (I'm not goiing to look it up, for fear that my eye will land on WIFTY while I'm there.)

Both Joseph and I had already submitted fake definitions of WIFTY by then - but I hope nobody else is confused!

We don’t always make it obvious for newcomers but you can find the rules at http://www.dixonary.net/ (click on game rules and advice).

You can mostly ignore the “official” 1990 rules, and the “basic” rules are all you probably need to know until you get stuck with the deal.

The “Real Rules” are a more detailed summary of how we really play, including non-rules like “don’t repeat words”.

I haven't had to deal with that as I am officially 'do not leave your house' for 14 weeks extended for another 6 weeks. Our wonderful system made a one-hour oldie slot early morning Friday on the first week of lockdown. I calculated from demographics that meant that as  42% of the customers fulfilled the designation 'oldie' and that therefore to give them one-hour a week was a recipe for no social distancing and suggested that my wife didn't go for us. However she did go. My guesses were proved accurate there were hundreds of people mikking around to try and get in - eventually the store controllers gave up and let everybody in while there was still something on the shelves. Actually my demographics was crude in that I should have eliminated children under 16 from the mix (oldies up to 73%) and then divided by 2 for households ect bu even so it was arrant and senseless stupidity. It got better with experience and they added in the next hour for medics, careworkers, etc

Talking of shelves being empty then there are still some products unavailable - flour of any kind is rare. (Problem is that you can probably get 50lb bags because the mills are still working but the factories  packing into normal size bags were closed down) as a senior person in the care industry said "the government were not following any plan but reacting day by day to what seemed to be the greatest pressure"

One question: Where are you located, specifically in what time zone? The reason for asking is that some dealers try to give deadlines in the time zones of all active players. There are many time zones, including a few where English is the native language, where we don't have anyone yet - unless you're in one of them.

Joe,

This has happened several times. There have also been many instances of two players submitting definitions that are, for all practical purposes, identical. In both these situations, the dealer combines the definitions into one. (It's up to the dealer to decide, on his or her own, when two definitions are close enough to do this.) The rules describe how a combined definition should be scored.

Yes, in multiple ways!

I recently won the deal on the word ‘hobidy-booby`.  I didn’t know what the word meant, but I knew of a “hobby horse” and that “booby” meant an idiot, so while singing the song “If I only had a brain” to myself, I submitted the definition “a scarecrow”.   That happened to precisely match the real definition, word for word, and .    Other players have done so similarly, most often our resident “walking dictionary” John Barrs.

Mentioning John is relevant because in the very next round, I dealt “iddy-umpty” based on a definition from oxford’s current online offering.  John’s submission was related, but different, but I found out later actually existed as a “real” definition in an older/different dictionary.

These are far from the only examples.  Given most of us have at least a passing interest in words/definitions/etymology/history/Latin, it is a reasonably frequent occurrence.  I remember a round where two players both submitted identical definitions to the dictionary (and all 3 definitions were combined, so we didn’t realize until the end of the round).

It's interesting that you found us on Wikipedia.  I discovered that article several years ago and at some point we were removed, but it appears we’ve returned.  I have played the Jackbox Games “Fibbage” version with some of my friends as well, which is fun but not nearly as fun as this game!

Welcome and we hope you stick around a long time!

I must protest "resident walking dictionary" in two ways; firstly, I am moving into senility with a fair degree of memory loss; and secondly, while I have always read voraciously I have had a very varied career: Botany (Latin), Theology (Greek, Hebrew, Latin) and Computing where I was a client support software engineer and learned a lot of specialist terminology from clients. I did Botany originally because of a desire to do horticulture but became an ecological taxonomist - there are at least four naming systems for plants depending on whether one is looking at a plant as a botanist or a gardener or a florist .  My wife's father was an architect and a successful author in that area - and they have some funny words! (eg. in context, WITHE as the vertical wall between two chimneys sharing a single pot.) Hence I have (or had) a broad vocabulary.

I am also pedantic<gdr>

There is also an ongoing discussion about disqualification: I take the position that if I can deduce the meaning of a word - from,  its supposed etymology, then I should declare myself DQ when I see the definitions if my deduction was correct. Others play the game by only DQing themselves if they actually know the word.  A too subtle distinction for me!

How do you define  "memory loss". I am also moving into senility. I seem to remember things from the past. At least some things.  what happens to me is failure to remember recent things. For example, we might be going out to dinner and my husband will say  "we will leave here at 5:45. I will ask him at least once afterward what time we're leaving. I suppose I could write down the time and pin it to whatever I'm wearing, but that seems ridiculous.

>How do you define  "memory loss"

My Mum went through an almost total loss of recent memory but quite good ancient past; ^I^ to completely mixing up details of ancient past (like items from my childhood, my sister's childhood and her own childhood assigned to each other); then no real relationship with  any item of memory; to no real relations ship with the here and now at all. She would remember that she had watched TV 10 minutes ago but have no memory of what she had watched. Failure to understand the simplest film or sitcom plot etc

I personally am at the ^!^ point above -- no trustworthy memory of recent things and a definite loss in the past - much of my word knowledge has gone - but it is sporadic. Made worse by my ME/CFIDS which has meant - for several years  - that I can lose the word I was going to use next in a conversation. In the past my memory would usually supply a synonym (so fast that hardly anyone noticed) Now I am nowhere near so fast and there are fewer synonyms available plus I can completely forget what I was in process of talking about anyway

You may not remember that the fatigue part of my ME/CFIDS has always meant that things require longer - eg, for many years it has been not unusual for me to take two or more sessions to type an email - this one is at two sessions so I will terminate now
