I'd been saving up BEGLERBEG  (the Ottoman provincial governor , #6) for some time, but in the event it didn't do as well as I'd hoped, scoring me a D7.  Maybe it was because quite a few players voted double Turkish (6 & 8, to inclue Efrem's captain of Janisseries).  Efrem got his just deserts and won the next deal with a magnificent 9*.  Paul Keating was the lucky runner-up with 6* for his clever Gaelic homophone which I certainly believed.

The phrase beag air bheag is genuine Scots Gaelic, and has a parallel in Irish. And it really does mean ‘little by little’. That much can be believed. But it’s pronounced [bek εr vek] and so does not much resemble The Word, and there is no evidence I that can find to suggest that it was ever used in English.

11 and 7 are in error. I did not write the egg definition. And now I'm noticing that my own definition is not there, unless I am still groggy.

Thanks, Tim. It sounded Turkish to me, so I went with that in my def and followed the same line of reasoning with a vote. New word in due course.

Re #13, the herding dog: This is Laddie, my lady love's English Shepherd. He's retired from active herding, which he did for several years with her Shetland sheep in western Massachusetts. At 14 years old, he's earned his comfortable retirement. The definition could have been his description! (Despite the breed's name, which it has only had since 2003, it originated in the U.S., mostly from collie ancestors. It's not an AKC breed, which thankfully helps it avoid most of the breeding excesses of some other breeds, but is recognize by the UKC.)

Debbie

You're right.  Something has gone seriously wrong with the results side of my scoring spreadsheet.  The input side still shows you as having submitted the tomfoolery def but the results side has replaced it with a second copy of the Filipino egg roll def.
I'll sort it out and post a revised version as soon as I can.  I don't think it's going to alter the next dealer.

There was a tomfoolery definition at position #7 in the original list. The egg-roll definition was in the original list only once, at #11.

The votes for #7 and #11 are correctly recorded, and I think the authorship is too, unless it turns out that Hugo wrote #7: all of the other players in the last 5 rounds are accounted for.

The text of #7 is clearly incorrect in the final posting, because it does not match the initial announcement.

But correcting that will not change the numbers in the round results.
