Folks,

A respectable 15 definitions of MOSSER  follow. A few of them came in during the extension period, so it paid off. One - only one - is correct. The rest are products of your fertile imaginations. The defs have been edited slightly for format consistency and are in ascending order by character count. That might not always correspond to visual length in your email display font.

Please vote for two by Reply to this message before the deadline that follows the list. If you realize on seeing the definitions that you know what MOSSER means, let me know by private email to emal...@verizon.net

1. a gravedigger.

2. a hill farmer.

3. a swamp-dweller.

4. a talkative or boastful person.

5. a Frenchman [18th century slang].

6. a person assigned to wash golf balls.

7. [WWI Sl.] a lazy soldier; also, a coward.

8. an oriental moth that produces brownish silk.

9. a smuggler (esp. of sheep, from England to France).

10. a 17th century raider or bandit in the Scottish borders.

11. a spiked wheel used by landscapers to lay sod in an even manner.

12. one who lies low but keeps his head to the ground (to gather information).

13. [Cockney] a hard master, a cruel boss; orig. obs. perhaps from Yiddish momser, bastard.

14. a foolish or obnoxious person prone to making stupid statements and/or inappropriate behavior.

15. [NE slang] in American football, an informal, often amateur, scrimmage played upon an unfinished field.

Votes are due about 41 hours from now, as defined by the top row of the following table. The others are conversions by timeanddate.com. They're usually reliable, but use them at your own risk.

and other times in other places.

New players are welcome to vote, as are old friends who didn't submit a definition. The only requirement is that you not know what the word means. Full rules at http://www.dixonary.net/game-rules-and-advice/rules .

Vote away!

Due to the current state of affairs here in the U.S., I have to vote for:

3. a swamp-dweller.

and

What a great bunch of defs. I wanted to vote for all of the first three and almost didn’t read further.  But I’m glad I did.

But I’ll still return to the beginning and vote for 1 and 3.

I had a whopping three ideas for this word. With so many votes spread out, I'm wondering if I should have chosen differently.

Alas, for some strategic voting:

4 & 9
