Fellow Dixonarists (or is it Dixonaristi?),

Thirteen definitions of LEISTER follow. Despite what you may think, and what some of you will predictably say, one of them is correct. The rest are your creations. They have been edited slightly for format consistency and are in ascending order by character count. That might not correspond to visual length in your email display font.

Please vote for two by Reply to this message before the deadline that follows the list. If you realize on seeing the definitions that you know what LEISTER means, let me know by private email to emal...@verizon.net

1. [Scot.] a jute dealer.

2. a lightweight cotton quilt.

3. [Brit. slang] a baked bean sandwich.

4. [Lancs.] a patchy morning fog or mist.

5. [Naut.] slow in going about, as a ship.

6. a fishing spear with three barbed prongs.

7. a crumbly reddish-coloured cheese made of cow's milk.

8. a fine-grained quartzite used to line refractory furnaces.

9. [ON, Obs.] a maker or layer of roof-tiles; a house-builder.

10. A residual hill that consists of hard rock in an otherwise eroded area.

11. the legally established price paid to an owner when a slave is critically injured.

12. a monk who advised an abbot on the stewardship of the lands and properties owned by the monastery.

13. [19c Lancs. Dialect] the drive belt, usually made of rope or woven fabric, used to transmit power in textile machinery.

Votes are due about 47 1/2 hours from now, as defined by the top row of the following table. The other rows are conversions by timeanddate.com. They're usually reliable, but use them at your own risk.

and other times in other places.

New players are welcome to vote, as are old friends who didn't submit a definition. The only requirement is that you not know what LEISTER means. Full rules at  http://www.dixonary.net/game-rules-and-advice/rules .

Vote on!

A baked bean sandwich sounds revolting!   I'll try 9 and 13.

          13. [19c Lancs. Dialect] the drive belt, usually made of rope or woven fabric, used to transmit power in textile machinery.
