Thank you to everyone who participated and supported our day of entertaining the Tallapoosa County Sheriff's Girl's Ranch residents and house parents this past Saturday, September 6th. We had a very enjoyable day with those who came to our club to visit with us.
The day began at 9:00 a.m. when the girl's arrived. We had some activities for them to enjoy including rock painting which quickly became a favorite of all. They painted many rocks for themselves and to leave at the club for landscape enhancement. Our Commodore, Bobby Edmond, provided a brief history of DSC and an overview of the club's members and sailboats. Don Connolly, certified sailing instructor, provided an entertaining presentation of sailing, winds, and how a sailboat uses the wind to its benefit. Thank you to all who volunteered to skipper boats for our guests; Don Connolly had five on his boat along with Liz, Dave Harle had two on his boat along with Stephanie, Dave Hilgendorf had two on his boat along with Lana, Jim Simons had two on his boat, Chris Hodge had three on his boat, and Luke Bloodworth had three on his boat. While the winds were not strong, there was enough to provide an enjoyable sail for over an hour around the Youngs Island, Paces Point and Wicker Point shorelines. At noon, we had lunch provided by Keith and Jennifer Bennett. Thank you both. After lunch, Sara Wolf, Associate Member, provided a very interesting and engaging presentation on her adventures swimming the English Channel in June. Everyone was very intrigued by her accomplishments. At 1:30, those who wanted to sail again were taken back out for an hour or more until the storms began to develop. Some of the girls enjoyed a brief swim. Thank you to Scott Roberts, the Jeff Wray family, Jim Locke, Jeff Smith, and Will Burkhalter for assisting with the entertaining of our guests and riding shotgun in the safety boats.
We all had so much fun that it was hard to pack up and end the day. I can't post this message with the pictures, so look for pictures on Facebook.
