Hi all who have joined the new group,

Using a trial version of PG Offline, I have downloaded the first 1,000 messages (1999 to 2000) from the old Yahoo group, one as a text file which I imported into Excel and the other as an HTML file.  These 2 files are attached.  Can those of you who have more knowledge of this than me, let me know whether such files would be useful.  They are just a listing in the date order of messages with no files attached, but presumably can be searched for a specific topic.  I believe that files can be downloaded as a separate exercise.

To download all message in the previous group, I will have to purchase the software for $25 USD.

I know that there is a lot of valuable information in the Yahoo group, but if I were to download all of it in a single file of the form of those attached, would it be useful to anyone?

Kind regards

Geoff Ward

I don't remember what I did but I was able to get something like 20,000 from the Poodle group which could be seen in their proprietary format. There was a limit to the amount that could be exported. Not having a DKV I think that most of the files would not be of use to me but may a few people can each contribute a few dollars toward the $25.

Ok well first off both of those downloads are highly useful, so that answers that.

It's a matter of preference but I suggest that the html download is much more versatile than is the .xls download. The html can be read as plain text. I tried that and it looked great. Also the html can be searched easily, and can be concatenated easily.

it would be helpful if yo included what you are replying to. i don't
seem to have the message you are answering or maybe it is out of order.
this has always been a problem with yahoo making it really important to
include the original message. fortunately yahoo and all its problems
will be a thing of the past soon :)

I got a message from yahoo that a download of all my data is available.
have not looked at it yet because i am not ready for the confusion that
will invariably result. i am guessing that you are referring to this
download. i have a very limited satellite connection and if there is a
choice to be made i probably should pick just one format.

xlx can be converted to tabbed text which can then be read easily by a
variety of methods. depending on how they do the html it could be a
benefit or it could be a nightmare.

Hi Spencer. I was replying to Geoff Ward's post where he used PG Offline to download and post archives of the yahoo messages on xls and html. I've got to learn how to include the message text that I am replying and I don't know why you saw it as a reply to you when it was for Geoff. Anyway, good thing you didn't listen to that "Let it snow!"

Actually I did listen so you might have to report me to the DRM police. Just once so hopefully the sentence will be light.

to all who have not figured it out yet, the naughty list is a lot more fun than the nice list.

Hi Larry
I think we're past thinking of producing either of the 2 downloads shown in my earlier response. We now have a download of all messages in 2 formats:
1. As an .mbox file for those who would wish to install Mozilla Thunderbird or the Windows Mbox Viewer from Sourceforge at https://sourceforge.net/projects/mbox-viewer/ as a free viewer; and
2. as a .pst file for those who use Microsoft Outlook. I have tried both and they are in a quite usable format. I thought that the .html file was the worst option - just endless text with no structure.

Kind regards

Geoff Ward

Hi,  was the archive of the old group in mbox format ever uploaded somewhere?   I've only found the google drive link to the .pst file.

Thank you, Geoff.  You will get this message when downloading, but you can do a virus scan afterward, if you are concerned,

What program do you use to open an MBOX file?  I'm using Gmail )obviously) and Windows 10.

Thanks.

Hi Stu

There are two options I am aware of for viewing .mbox files

1. For those using Thunderbird as their email program, I believe that Thunderbird can view .mbox files.  I have not confirmed this.

2. For other users, you can down load the .mbox file from Google Drive and download and install the program mboxview.exe (Windows only) from the following site: https://sourceforge.net/projects/mbox-viewer/

Hi Geoff,

I used your second option for Windows.  Perfect!  Thank you.

Stay safe.

Before I do this, are there files there that could be copied to a thumb drive and played on my DKC? Always looking for good music for that, especially if it also has MIDI stuff, as my Yamaha has a MIDI bolted under it and it sounds great for music (like Phantom of the Opera) that has piano, strings, percussion, flutes, oboe, etc.

If so, are there specific places I should look for that, as opposed to going through the entire archive?

Jon

The .mbox file that we’ve been talking about does not contain any midi files.  It just contains the text of the 10 years on messages on the old Yahoo group.

We did set up a Google Drive location for sharing of midi file.  However, it has not been used significantly.

This is the link to it  https://drive.google.com/drive/folders/1q8HAMrvxMyGRpI8DDGQShBIJ_itUudNo

I will get off my a**e one day and upload a lot of midi files to this archive.  Other members of this group should consider doing likewise.
