Just as a reminder for the group, some of the best performance recordings are available from the Yamaha eCompetition site in the best format possible (XP format midis):


The link will show the 2018 files, but you can see previous years on the left-hand navigation.

i am not sure if they are still on my server but whether or not, i can transfer the whole set of yamaha e-comp stuff for others to share. i think i have all years and as the high res versions when available. i spent a fair amount of time adding MIDI text events to the files and also have databases of that information as well as a set of the tags.txt files that Mid2pianoCD uses to add MP3 tags. i had to rename all the files by adding the competition date because Yamaha (in their infinite wisdom) reused file names. they only did this a few times but i figured that adding the date was useful anyway?

personally i find that there are really few very good performances in the whole e-comp series. there is a lot of repetition as the performers progressed through the competitions and only a few of the competitors were really very good. i would love to find someone with good musical taste and lots of time who would go through the thousands of files and find the good ones.

I think we should just copy up the winners from each year in one place, and rename them in a way that's more useful than the way the eCompetition site handled it. We can add attribution in the directory.

I started organizing them by year - directory. For file name: I've used this naming convention: Performer name and performance number: (E.g.: Huang01), delimited by a "_", then composer, "_", then title, "_", "XG" if applicable, .mid. For example: "Huangci01_Liszt_Etude No5 Feux Follet_XP.MID"

Most of my own library consists of Pianosoft disks the dealer gifted me when I bought the piano. I've found that standard Midi files generally lack character - so when I first came across the eCompetition recordings, it was nice having the XP format midis - as they actually capture the nuances of the performance. That said, I too don't have an ear for which of the performances are worthy - hence my suggestion to just copy up the finalists.

copying just the finalists is a good idea. i am not sure that the file names show anything that would help with such copying. there is really a lot of crap if you just try hit or miss approaches. i am 65 years old and do not have the time to try it all :)

dear friends. The server for the   Minnesota International Piano-e-competition   files has been under contruction for a very long time. Over the years I deleted all XP files as I thought I didn't need them owning an upright (DYUS1). However a friend of mine bought a Disklavier Pro piano and would like to hear these higher quality MIDIs. And now I can't find them anymore.
Is anyone aware of a backup site? Or maybe want to share a copy?
It would be much appreciated!

I have the full set of many years probably not the latest. It was a bitch to extract the meta data for a variety of reasons. this is what i have. i added years to the filenames since the names were recycled over the years if a pianist was in more than one comp.

i think I added all the meta data to the files in a way to show in my free eroll player program as well as in VanBascos  I also have a listing of all the pieces but would have to search for it. If not I am almost sure about the keyword value text in the files but I never listen to this stuff and would have to find a backup to check. I have a program that lists all the keyword/values in a folder of files so the list can be reconstructed if anyone wants to. If so I will post the listing program. this one will work if the keywords are there and i think they are. it creates an excel sheet with the files and all the meta data it finds  you can play by clicking the links but you need to set up the default MIDI player and device to get it to play on your piano.i have many other similar programs and of course they work with any keyworded files including my emulation files

i downloaded the higher quality versions but they should play on any DKV There is a lot of repeated stuff and it takes a lot of time to find the good stuff but concentrating on the final performances helps eliminate the crap.

i have spent the last three months writing a program that improves the output of file made by the amazing Audio to MIDI program that converts solo piano recordings (audio) to MIDI  There is much better music to be had by this route. I converted about 7000 of my piano pieces collected over the years and also "improved" the 10000 files from the makers of A2M. This has taken me countless hours and I am willing to share the program that improves the A2M output. Without these fixes the music can be difficult to listen to unless you are drunk. Over-pedaling stray notes etc can distract from even the best performance. Unfortunately the MIDIs are from copyrighted originals and the decisions about how to deal with this in the realm of Artificial Intelligence has not been made in the legal world. This prevents me from sharing my files which took many hours to convert. I had to buy a fast gaming computer and it still took over 4 days to process 7000 files. Anyone can do the same with their favorites and they are welcome to my "improve" program as well as other utilities I used for extracting and managing meta data.

Yes, I know these are from Yamaha. I did download these at one point. 

Your Audio2Midi work sounds terrific. It’s too bad that you can’t sell them. I’d buy them.

Dear Spencer, thanks for getting back this soon with all these files. It works like a charm. Great to have acces to the XP files again.
And yes I would very much like the programs you refer to, both to organise all these files and the one to tinker with AI and music. Love your MIDIMOD2 BTW!

the files for playing around with the A2M stuff are on my web site there is a link to that page on the home page.

i have hundreds of programs for dealing with midi files both the music and the "meta data" let me know what you want to do

if you want to play the yanaha files on one of the modern solenoid players you can create files using mid2pianocd and pt the tag.txt files in the folder with the files you want to convert mid2 will add MP3 tags to the files so you can see what you are playing in a media player such as media monkey

I am afraid to admit I don’t have a clue on how to hook up my pc to my old Disklavier DKC500RXG and play midi files  on my Yamaha Grand Piano. My choir director came over to my house and just set it up years ago but it’s all fallen apart .  All I had to do was find more midi files.  Can you suggest a source for me to learn how to do this? Basic 101 stuff

The link to files with A2M stuff on your website undortunately doesn’t work anymore.

I would like a program to better deal with the meta data of midifiles. Got 100’s of them with incoherent file names. Maybe you can point to a clever program?

Howard, I have the same model on my C1 and I have it all hooked up and can play midi to it. What computer or tablet do you have? I can make you a quick video of exactly what to do if you’d like.

someone else said they could not download the A2M stuff from my site they were using chrome it works for me with firefox. windows is getting weirder and weirder about security. please let me know if these work. i was hoping to avoid using google drive because it is more difficult to maintain the files if they change but it looks like i need to.

it is a bitch maintaining this stuff on google derive and my site etc especially using a free html editor that screws up links regularly

so now the only place that i will maintain is the page on my site spencerserolls.com  there are just two relevant links on the A2M page  one for the A2M program and one for my stuff. These actually link to my google drive but now there are just two links instead of a lot more. the links shown below are prety much current but it would be best to get the stuff from the links on my A2M page
