hi guys,

I can see sources of a G.729 implementation in the ffmpeg dependency in chrome, and trace of support of G.729 in the webrtc stack (netq, sdp level, ....), but not apparent full support of G.729 in webrtc in chrome.

How difficult would it be to add?
Is it something that Google plan to do?
Did I miss anything?

Alex.

Shouldn't it require paying license fees?

Best regards
Sergio

just like H264, the answer is yes.

I assume that, just like H264, if it is already in chrome through a dependency, they have taken care of the license fee problem.

That's also why I do not expect this to be in the webrtc stand alone code, but maybe in Chrome (hopefully everywhere with a compilation flag, but hey, that would be pushing my luck)

AFAIK you have to pay license for codec usage, not for implement it. So having G729 code on ffmpeg doesn't mean that you can use it for free.

Sergio

true. but it is the one compiling the code who shoulder the burden of the license. My hope was to see Chrome/google having compiled it and shouldering the license already (just like H.264).

Hi Alex,

there are no plans to add G.729 to WebRTC in Chrome.

Best regards,

Niklas

I don't think that is correct.

http://www.sipro.com/FAQ-G-729.html

The license is per channel usage on end-products. 0 channels => 0 fees ;)

Sergio

you can't.
Additionally, the webrtc Product Manager said there is no plan to add support for it in the future.

There really shouldn't be any more patent concerns on G.729
