Hi all,

FreeDV 2.3.0 has been released, including support for running it directly on a compatible Flex 8000 or Aurora series radio, enhancements to performance (thanks to the removal of Python) as well as improvements to FreeDV Reporter filtering functionality and other bug fixes. It can be downloaded using the following links:

Hi all,

All versions up to the latest have worked well on my system. I use an HL2 with Thetis 2.10.3.12 on Windows 11 and when I installed FreeDV 2.3.0 I see no waterfall on rx although it seems to be working fine on tx. I have made no changes (maybe I need to?) and when I switch the modem on I get a thin slice of waterfall then just black. Any ideas appreciated.

Regards,

Roger (G8VLR).

Roger, did the bandwidth get changed to something less than 1.5k by chance?

Roger

A couple of VK hams (coincedently both using IC7300's) had the same issue you are reporting but the problem was in the Windows sound settings, the installation of version 2.3.0 had inadvertently caused  Windows to turn on audio recording device enhancements.

When all enhancements were turned off version 2.3.0 worked as previous versions did on the same computer.

Okay I've checked that the rx audio is clean with no enhancements checked and no exclusive use checked. So for now it's back to 2.2.1 which is still working beautifully.

Roger.

Does anyone know if there is a way to set up the "Message" and Station information that is used by FreeDV reporter when running the Docker?
Thanks and 73

Hi Walter,

Thanks for coming back.No settings in Thetis or the FDV gui have been changed from when I was running FreeDV 2.2.1 on my system.

Well, I have been activity testing the 2.3.0 DOCKER release since it
came out and I have found some problems with it causing the 8600 to
Lockup and shutdown. Then when it is brought back up the APD no longer
works and the TX pan-adapter display is quite wide.
This has happened on both SmartSDR and AetherSDR with the 4.2.18
firmware on the Radio.
To get the Radio to work normally again I have to remove the DOCKER and
do a HARD RESET and a Power reset on the Radio.
I have run the DEV Pi AppImage for many months without this issue and
testing the new release version now on the Pi but so far so good.

I made sure that the Pi version WAS NOT running at the same time I had
DOCKER running.

Also on the DOCKER we need a way to add our Comments and other FreeDV
Reporter information, I have been working with Alan WA9WUD on his
Node-Red flow but with the problems I have had with DOCKER I won't be
able to continue.

Thanks a lot to those who are working at FreeDV and I appreciate all
your hard work

I too went back to the previous dev version of 2.30.

Mooneer.....I see a lot of issues with the latest 2.30 public release with audio.....is there a better version of the Flex Docker version we can try?

Just installed v2.3.0 on my old Windows10 box and all went well. FreeDV seems to be running as it should. I notice there was hardly any waiting time for things to start. Modem started almost instantly.

I am a FreeDV DX-er. Regular skeds on 20m longpath with US east and 12m shortpath. Also longpath with Europe. DX-ing without background noise is most enjoyable. I would like to encourage everyone to regularly check the higher bands for activity and stay for a short while. 12m is often wide open to US from here. I was heard by KJ4FPA (FL) for many hours on 12m the other day.
For any skeds, pls e-mail me directly.

Hi Alan,

If you have a GitHub account you can try these:

(You'll need to be logged into GitHub before the above links will work.)

Let me know if these work any better for you, especially when it comes to audio quality.

Thanks,

Hi Dana,

There is a Mac download link on the Downloads page:

The link on that page goes to https://github.com/drowe67/freedv-gui/releases/download/v2.3.0/FreeDV-2.3.0.dmg as well if you prefer to download directly. Hope this helps!

I installed v2.3.0 yesterday. All worked well.
Today I cannot get RX sound into FreeDV. Check all usual suspects in IC-7300 and in Windows-10 to no avail. TX audio and PTT work alright. Just no RX sound getting into FreeDV.

Need help to fix this.

tnx & 73

This Flex Docker  version did not help.  I have returned to freedv-waveform-2.3.0-dev-da50.   This version works well.

The audio seems distorted compared to dev-da50.  Shortly after starting the slice in fdv mode, the flex SNR meter stops working and there are no spots displayed on the panadapter of incomining decodes.

Mooneer,
I also have the same comment about the Audio on the Docker version, and
it still locked the Flex8600.
I am testing the Pi AppImage now, but I do think the 2.3.0-dev-da50
sounded better.

Hi Alan and Bret,

Re: da50--I took another look at the changes since then and nothing obvious is jumping out, unfortunately. I reverted one change that may be causing problems somehow and a build is now in progress (https://github.com/drowe67/freedv-gui/actions/runs/25928970099?pr=1348). If you can try that and let me know how it goes, that would be good.

Also, just to confirm--the audio quality problem is with both the Docker container and the AppImage, right? Or just the former?

Thanks,

-Mooneer K6AQ

Thanks.  Testing so far of "freedv-waveform-2.3.1-dev-9520" is good.

Decode quality is much better.  Spots show on panadapter with lower SNRs, and the Flex Meter does not fail over some time.

I was able to fix my RX audio problem by changing to another USB port on my PC. No idea why the one I first used did not pass RX audio to the PC.
This was the last thing I expected to be the cause of the problem. The problem occurred after I updated to v2.3.0. May just be coincidence.

I tried the versions downloaded from the above link in Flex Docker.  I did not test the AppImage.

Both Bret and I conclude the audio took a sharp turn for the worse.  I spent some time again using "freedv-waveform-2.3.0-dev-da50", and find the audio quality and ability to produce higher SNR values superior to 2.3.0 or 2.3.1.

Hello Mooneer,

When I started using the FreeDV Flex Waveform on my 8600M, I noticed the audio bandwidth wasn't as good as when one uses the SmartSDR program with FreeDV, that the audio frequencies on the high end were not there.  I wonder if there is some sought of audio frequency sweep you could do to check it?

I wonder if this could be the result of what Flex Radio did to get FreeDV into the 8000 and Aurora, or on the FreeDV end?

I just went ahead and merged the version of the fix in build 9520 into GitHub master. I'm not sure why implementing the fix this way rather than the other way is working better, unfortunately, but considering that I was also getting reports of the radio not behaving properly, I'm going to prioritize stability here.

Anyway, build links below:

I have used the "freedv-waveform-2.3.1-dev-13f8" version above for a few days.  It is a step in the correct direction, but when compared to "freedv-waveform-2.3.0-dev-da50", it still has issues

The audio is improved, but continues to require a stronger SNR to decode, and is distorted.  Also, although improved, the Fex SNR meter always fails after a few hours....better than earlier 2.3.0 dev versions, but still an issue.

I am again returning to freedv-waveform-2.3.0-dev-da50.

Hi Alan,

Would you say that 13f8 is worse than 9520 was? Or about the same? In previous emails it sounded like 9520 actually fixed the issue, but there weren't really any code changes between those two builds.

Thanks,

Mooneer, you asked: "Would you say that 13f8 is worse than 9520 was? Or about the same?"

Yes, 13f8 was an improvement over 9520, but did not work as well as freedv-waveform-2.3.0-dev-da50.   da50 worked well....but not perfect.

9520 had serious stability issues.  13f8 was stable, but the audio stream and flex meter were not always reliable....  The Flex SNR meter would just stop updating.
