Hello FreeDV Mac User.

Does anyone have the latest development version of FreeDV 2.0 for Mac by any chance? The version before the official release?

I would like to check the old version for some tests due to problems with the sound settings of Bluetooth devices.

Thanks!

If you find the link to that version please post it.  My Mac will not run the latest FreeDV 2.0 release.  I have spent several hours trying to make the latest FreeDV 2.0 work on my Mac.
Thanks

David,

I'm on an Apple Silicon Mac running macOS 15.5 and the latest version from the freedv.org page works fine for me.

When you say it "will not run" do you mean it will not launch? or is it some other runtime issue?

If it's a launch error, try launching from a terminal and you'll be able to see the error.

/Applications/FreeDV.app/Contents/MacOS/FreeDV

BTW there's the 20250130 version on GitHub (https://github.com/drowe67/freedv-gui/releases/tag/v2.0.0-20250130), which will expire within a couple of weeks. Hopefully I can get a 2.0.1 out before then, but no guarantees.

Where would one download the new version?

Hi Daniel,

I typically send emails announcing new versions, but you can also find them on GitHub: https://github.com/drowe67/freedv-gui/releases. Right now 2.0.0 is still the latest, but I'm hoping to address the remaining known audio issues and roll out 2.0.1 soon.

Thanks,

Thanks for telling me to launch the FreeDV app in terminal.  I found a way to stop the FreeDV app from crashing and everything seems to be working as long as I do not open the Audio Config Transmit screen and click the "Record 2 Seconds" button.  Clicking the "Record 2 Seconds" button while running the app in terminal will cause the app to crash.  Tomorrow I will try making a FreeDV contact and hopefully I can have a FreeDV QSO using my old MacBook Air.
Thanks again

Hmm, did you happen to get any popups asking about microphone privileges? I thought it was asking whenever it was trying to record anything but it's possible it just asked when you pushed Start. Fortunately once you agree once it shouldn't need to ask again.

Mooneer

I do not remember getting at anytime when I have used a FreeDV app that I got any popups asking about microphone privileges like I do for some other apps and websites.

The attached screen shot shows something that I have never seen before.  What is: CADefaultDeviceAggregate-679-0

When I am running the FreeDV app from terminal and click the transmit "Play 2 Seconds" button, the terminal shows the following:
-----
20:07:13 [88] INFO /Users/mooneer/freedv-gui/src/audio/MacAudioDevice.mm:101: Create MacAudioDevice "USB AUDIO  CODEC" with ID 45, channels 1 and sample rate 48000

Next I click the transmit "Record 2 Seconds" button, the terminal shows the following:
-----
20:08:25 [95] INFO /Users/mooneer/freedv-gui/src/audio/MacAudioDevice.mm:101: Create MacAudioDevice "Built-in Microphone" with ID 52, channels 1 and sample rate 48000
20:08:25 [96] INFO /Users/mooneer/freedv-gui/src/audio/MacAudioDevice.mm:145: Attempting to set sample rate to 48000.000000 for device 52

I restarted the FreeDV app using the terminal and click the "start" button for the FreeDV app. The waterfall appeared. I tried crashing the app by going to transmit and receive many times. I was using the 10 meter calling frequency for testing and the 10 meter band was dead. I adjusted my TS590 radio to output 50 Watts and 75 Watts. I am using the SignaLink for RF isolation between radio and computer. After many transmit/receive test, I stopped the FreeDV app and quit the Terminal app.

The next test was with no Terminal app running, I started the FreeDV app by clicking on the icon for the FreeDV app. I did not open the Audio Config windows.  I did many transmit and receive tests on 10 meters and did not crash the program.

I am doing more tests today.

Does the FreeDV app write information on my hard drive outside the FreeDV app container?  Are there more than the following two places?
/Applications/FreeDV.app/Contents/MacOS/FreeDV
~/Library/Preferences/FreeDV Preferences

Thanks

I have just finished my first QSO using FreeDV2.0.0.  I had to use the Terminal app to start the FreeDV app but it worked very well and I received an excellent signal report.  With using the Terminal app to start the FreeDV app, I can wait until version 2.0.1 or even version 3.0.0.

You might be able to enter something like this on the terminal to force microphone permissions for FreeDV:

sqlite3 $HOME/Library/Application\ Support/com.apple.TCC/TCC.db "INSERT OR IGNORE INTO access VALUES ('kTCCServiceMicrophone','/Applications/FreeDV.app/Contents/MacOS/FreeDV',1,2,4,1,NULL,NULL,0,'UNUSED',NULL,0,1687786159,NULL,NULL,'UNUSED',1687786159);"

That may allow it to work without needing to be run through the terminal.

I installed FreeDV 2.0.0 on my desk top iMac and it works great. My iMac is about 6 years and has the 3 GHz 6-Core Intel Core i5 processor.

Thanks yes, I was missing that context. When you said "My Mac will not run the latest FreeDV 2.0" I took it as more dramatic.

Hi David,

BTW there are some changes coming in for 2.0.1 that will likely help, but if you still have problems we can investigate further.

Thanks,
