Hi,
Thanks to the FreeDV development team,  a development release allows for the recording of decoded audio.  This has really helped me somewhat narrow down a long standing issue I have been experiencing.   When listening to the audio via my headset,  everyone sounds like Mickey Mouse.  When the decoded audio is played back via Windows Media player the audio is fine and sounds very natural.  So I have two questions:
1) Where in processing chain is decoded audio recorded to the WAV file?.  Is it before audio processing as defined in the Tools -> Filter -> Speaker Out Equalizer or after the Equalizer?
2) Does anyone have a idea why audio fed to my headset sounds like Mickey Mouse when the decoded audio played back via Window Media player sound fine?

Ron,

We've had something similar happen with WinAmp. Looking in the WinAmp forums I see

And a comment within initial post:

I created a primary buffer in the Output options....and it fixed everything.

Hopefully others will be able to tell us where a similar change can be made for FreeDV.

Hi Ron,

Recording takes place after the equalizer in the current set of proposed changes.

Re: audio issues--can you confirm that the selected sample rates in Tools->Audio Config (in both tabs) match what is set for them in Windows? You can check on the Windows side by going to Settings->System->Sound->All sound devices->[your sound device] and checking out what's shown in the "Format" field. For example, Virtual Audio Cable on my Windows 11 machine is set to 48 kHz sample rate in the below screenshot:

Hi Craig,

Looking at this a bit, it seems this might be something DirectSound specific. FreeDV uses WASAPI to communicate with audio devices on Windows so I'm not sure if there's an equivalent there.

Thanks,

Any difference if you disable "Allow applications to take exclusive control of this device" for all the devices you're using with FreeDV?
