Newcomer to FreeDV Looking for Help

Hello,

I am a totally visually impaired Ham wanting to get started with freeDV. I have a Windows 10 computer and a Kenwood TS-590SG radio. Is there anybody who has setup this radio and can answer the following questions? 

1. Do I need to load the Kenwood communications driver on my PC to be able to talk to the 590SG, or if I select the HAMLIB option will that also be able to do the rig control as well access the internal sound card? 

2. Is there anybody who has already setup this radio who can offer me a step-by-step to get going? 

3. I understand that the freeDV team built-in visually impaired screen accessibility into the program. Is anybody aware of the special procedures I will need to use in order to use the screen accessibility with NVDA?

Hi Neil,

I don't have the 590SG but based on what page 62 of the manual (http://manual.kenwood.com/files/B5A-0180-20.pdf) says, I'd install the drivers from Kenwood's website. Hamlib should be able to control the radio, so no need to run applications other than FreeDV (unless of course, you'd like to do so).

As for the screen accessibility question, I downloaded NVDA and noticed a few issues with the drop-down menus (especially under Tools, where a few didn't seem to output any audio) but other than that, the application seems to read the text correctly based on the position of the mouse cursor. I'll open a GitHub issue to resolve the issues I discovered but for the time being, the menus are ordered as follows:

Filter...

Start Play File - Mic In...

Start Record File - From Radio...

Start Record File - From Modulator...

Start Play File - From Radio...

Howdy,

I’m not Neil, but thanks for all of this. I have had FreeDV on my list of to do’s for a long time, but I’ve been a bit radio inactive lately. So I haven’t had FreeDV on any computer yet, either Mac or Windows, so have also not seen how it fares for accessibility with any screen reader. Thanks for taking the time to document its behavior with NVDA. Many, if not most, would probably not have taken the time or effort to do this, so props and kudos and plaudettes and such from another appreciative blind ham.

The fix is in https://github.com/drowe67/freedv-gui/pull/125, so either pulling that branch (or the ms-accessibility branch which I've been doing builds from) will get it.

Hi mooneer

I have a new pc (better say a younger used one)

An i7 2x2.9(3.9)ghz with 32 gb ram and two graphic Cards (hd4600 and nvidia quadro)

SUPERFAST … and i now can try mode 2020 (or 700c that also was a bit problematic here)

…aehem … mode 2020 does NOT Sound well … but i have no idea why (still testing)

All other modes work superb … no breaks and almost no errrors … all These can be decoded to a few db over Transponder noise (way lower as what an ssb qso would Need)

Hopefully i find one or who are willing to make some more Tests with mee

I do like the new scalable layout (even if it could have a bit of cosmetics)
