Using freedv with TS890

I would like to use my TS890 with freedv. My connection is via LAN with audio streams there. I use wfview to control the radio and receive audio via the LAN. Since the audio comes in and is outputted on the default audio port from the 890 I suspect I would have to set the freedv radio port to the output of that device, So it looks like doing it this way will require two sound cards just for receive? If anyone has done this using the LAN please let me know what your setup is. Using the LAN is obviously more flexible, as it can allow remote operation without a computer at the transceiver end.

Hi Doug,

I don't have a TS890 but I have used my IC-705 with wfview before. You'd just need to configure FreeDV to use the same devices wfview is set to output/input audio on. For example, with the following setup:

"Input to Computer From Radio" in Tools->Audio Config would be the "Audio Output" device from wfview and "Output from Computer To Radio" would be the "Audio Input" device IIRC. You'd then configure your headset/speakers/microphone as normal. Hope this helps!

Somehow I am still not getting this. Remember I am using Linux mont 21.3. I think I need to select the stream input for wfview but my only choices are my main audio card or USB devices that have nothing to do with audio input. There is no virtual input as suggested.  freedv won't let me select the same card for input and speaker output.

If someone actually has this running with wfview TS890 LAN and freedv It would be great to know how you are doing it?

Hi Doug,

Sorry, I thought you already had virtual devices configured in wfview. You should be able to run these commands in the terminal to create the devices: 

pactl load-module module-null-sink sink_name=FreeDV_Computer_To_Radio sink_properties=device.description=FreeDV_Computer_To_Radio

pactl load-module module-null-sink sink_name=FreeDV_Radio_To_Computer sink_properties=device.description=FreeDV_Radio_To_Computer

Once you run those commands and restart wfview, do you see those in the audio device list that it provides?

OK, I executed those commands and I now have those audio paths but I am still not clear on how to set things in both wfview and freedv. I am attaching screenshots of what I have set but when I start freedv all I get is feedback. I want audio to come from the radio to freedv and then in wfview from freedv to speakers.

Hi Doug,

Try the following settings:

wfview:

Audio Input: FreeDV_Computer_To_Radio.monitor

Audio Output: FreeDV_Radio_To_Computer

FreeDV:

Input To Computer From Radio: FreeDV_Radio_To_Computer.monitor

Output From Computer To Speaker/Headphones: alsa_output.pci-0000...

Input From Microphone To Computer: alsa_input.pci-0000....

Output To Radio From Computer: FreeDV_Computer_To_Radio

(The key is that there needs to be a path between FreeDV and wfview for both audio input and audio output.)

That page also provides instructions on making the virtual devices permanent. Once you have wfview working with FreeDV it might be a good idea to do that so you don't have to set things up again :)
