How do I get rid of the digital sound that is coming from my computer speakers? I also hear the audio from another ham, It just the digital sound is louder then the voice audio. I am unable to separate both digital audio (getting rid of the sound)  and voice audio. I am not a Windows expert so I could use some help.

You need two separate audio playback sources or virtual audio cables.

One for the digital audio playback (a monitor of the speaker audio) into
FreeDV and another for the FreeDV decoded audio back out with the voice.
A USB headset or a second sound card will work for that.

Alternatively you could use a virtual audio cable app and set that as a
sink for the rig audio fed to the FreeDV decoder (you can have a monitor
on that too that you can switch off as needed) and then the FreeDV
output to the speakers.

Rick, That is a good idea. I am using an Icom 7300 MK2 which has a
internal sound card. But I think the configuration does not address the
two sound cards, one in the computer and the other in the ic 7300 mk2

Dan,

It's a Windows "thing" but to be clear, it's also a Linux and MAC thing too.

You have an audio stream selected for "playback" in Windows that 's other than the FreeDV playback stream (or in addition to it)

Windows is also particularly irritating in that it sometimes changes things without asking!
Also, it will update in the middle of "stuff" and try to reboot when you're "not looking" , then when it does an update, it tries to sell you a bunch of Microshaft apps and services even though you may have declined them after the last update!

(And they wonder why many go to either the MAC or Linux and refuse to "upgrade" from Win10 to 11!!    BUT I DIGRESS!)

Have a look at the following thread It's specific to the IC705 but the Win11 "stuff" applies to the IC7300

Cheers,

Rick

Daniel,

Can you tell me if your hearing the digital sound only when your transmitting, or also while receiving?

As you should not be hearing anything at all, until a decoded voice comes out of your speakers.

It sounds like there may be a setting in the FreeDV audio mapping that may be missing something. Or Windows default sound settings are stepping on your digital codec.

But please let me know where your at on this, and I’ll be glad to help get you straightened out properly.

All the best,

Walter/K5WH

Could be speakers picking up RF mine do that.
Ferrites or filter or grounding PC usually one fixes, had best luck grounding the PC chassis

Good suggestions about possible rf feedback getting into the speakers. It is a very common issue. But I would expect you would have the same issue on SSB as well.

Try turning the power all the way down, or see if it goes away as you lower the power.

If it does, than ferrites as recommended are a great way to take care of it.

If you were hearing your OWN audio in the speakers, I would suggest RIGHT clicking on the PTT button and turning off the “Monitor transmitted audio” feature.

But you mentioned hearing the digital noise, so that sounds a lot like RF or audio mapping issue.

It's more likely an audio mapping issue.

The best way to prove it's not an RFI issue is to turn the power all the way down and see if it still does it.

AND, I cannot get any audio from the software to the Winblows speaker either.   Just like before!

Hi Rick,

As mentioned by others on the list, have you tried disabling audio enhancements in Windows? It might also be a good idea to make sure exclusive mode is turned off for each of the audio devices you're using with FreeDV.

Thanks,

Mooneer,

I did that in the previous versions with the same computer.  I wonder if Microshaft just decided I didn't need those settings any more and changed them.

I did however, uninstall the previous version before installing 2.3.0 so I wonder if Win11 makes changes when FreeDV is removed.

Win11 is always so frustrating!  OTOH, everything worked with the Linux Applmage

I have found that when an audio device is added to the computer the idiot Windows OS decides the default audio device should be changed to that new device. It is part of Microsoft's efforts to empoopify Windows.

Hi Rick,

I wonder if this test build will help? https://www.dropbox.com/scl/fi/ervcreyf80xa288s6cqga/FreeDV-2.3.1-dev-2026-05-12-d49a-windows-x86_64.exe?rlkey=3d00hinkhw67trr1dfld8fut3&dl=0. This is based on the GH pull request at https://github.com/drowe67/freedv-gui/pull/1335 and semi-reverts a change that might be contributing.

Thanks,

-Mooneer K6AQ

Well,

Nothing works in Winblows 11 Home. Distorted audio in FreeDV analog mode and feedback to the speaker during test.
Microshaft has decided that I do not have control of this computer.

I really do not want to have to re-install win11 every time I get a different version of FreeDV so I think I am going to just stop using Windows (for FreeDV)  altogether.

There's no problem getting it to work with the Macbook running Linux nor do I have a problem with my older AMD 6-core Linux Mint desktop.

I am back at square 1 with this 1 year old ACER laptop winning WIN11 Home.  I just cannot hate Microsuck enough!
