One of my (Win-11) installs of FreeDV has got an erroneous file with the RF frequencies that are displayed in the drop down list on the right of the UI panel.

When I go into Options-> Rig control the only frequencies listed are the ones that I have added, and all of them have an extraordinary number of additional zeros added to them. For instance, I attempted to add the 2m frequency that I am using for local testing of 144725kHz. FreeDV is currently showing it as 14,472,500,0  If I add the frequency again as 144725,000 then it now shows as 1,447,250,000,0

All the "standard" frequencies that show up correctly in my other install of FreeDV on another PC are correct.

I reinstalled FreeDV but exactly the same has happened, hence the frequency list must be stored somewhere that the uninstaller doesn't reach (registry?)

The config is in registry so a reset in the FDV gui should help.

Hi Malcolm,

If you haven't already, I suggest upgrading to 2.2.1 (there were bugs fixed over the previous few revisions involving how frequencies are converted). Then, you should be able to delete the following Registry key to force FreeDV to repopulate the frequency list: HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\freedv\Reporting\FrequencyList. Let me know if you still have problems and we can troubleshoot further.

Thanks,

Hi Mooneer

Well that both worked and didn't! (I'm running 2.2.1 BTW).

Deleting the registry key worked fine, the frequency list was recreated (see FreeDV_frequencylist.png) But if I ten insert a new frequency of 144725 (assuming kHz) the whole list gets multiplied by 10 (see FreeDV_frequencylist_2.png)

The install on my other PC does not do that, it's showing the correct frequency list even after I added the new frequency of 144725.

Update: I edited the Registry on the errant machine to exactly copy the registry on the "working" machine. All was well in the frequency list until I went into Tools-> Options to check the frequency list - all ok. But when I ""OK" out of that and start the modem, all the frequencies get mangled again.

I am pretty sure this have to do with locale way of showing numerals. When I work with some software that are not aware of the printing convention of numbers in French I have many error where the software is looking at spaces to divide thousands but the locale settings for the language will use coma to do the divide or other characters or even no space or coma at all.

Hi Malcolm,

I took a look at the screenshots again and noticed that you seem to have both the decimal and thousands separators set to "," (comma). You'll want both of those to be different. Try the following:

1. Go to Settings->Time & language->Language & region.
2. Expand "Regional format" as shown below and then click on "Number format":

3. Make sure "Decimal symbol" and "Digit grouping symbol" aren't the same. If they are, change one or both of them accordingly. For instance, it's pretty common in some of Europe for "Decimal symbol" to be "," and "." for "Digit grouping symbol".

4. Delete that Registry key again and restart FreeDV.

Let me know if you're still having trouble after doing the above.

Thanks,

Hi Mooneer

That was it, thanks. The two PCs had different settings for the decimal point and number separator, which accounted for the different behaviour between them. I've now corrected the errant PC and it's working correctly.

The European convention is to use a full stop (.) as the decimal point, and the comma (,) as the thousands separator. I think the US tends to use the comma as the decimal point (never quite worked out why!) and hence the confusion. FYI, the PC that worked correctly was a fresh Win11 install from new, the errant PC was an upgrade from Win10, must have inherited the wrong settings. The Windows calculator works better now as well!

Malcolm,
It is actually the other way. In the EU (European Union) comma is usually the decimal point och fullstop is thousand separator. Great Britain and Ireland use the reverse.

Now that's something I didn't realise, thanks and sorry!

Seems so logical to have the decimal point as a full stop - but then again that's how we were brought up! One to watch out for in the future :)
