Hello everyone!  We'd like to get the group's input on having CLIR/DLF issue a digital badge for the group as well as creating a Twitter hash tag (unless you've already done so).  We are beginning to offer digital badges for participation in our programs and groups. These badges can be shared on social media including Google+, LinkedIn, and Twitter, or linked to from your website.

We look forward to hearing your thought on this!

Hi Rita,

what kind of digital badges are you looking at? Is this a particular framework like http://www.openbadges.org/ ?
Definitely sounds like a good idea to me.

cheers,

Bram

Right now we are using Basno http://basno.com/   At some point we'd love to use  open source like with Mozilla, but haven't explored that option in depth yet.

I can see some benefit, in that it can be used to identify people with similar interests.  As long as it is not construed as a mark of accomplishment or skill instead, I'm fine with that.

As far as I know, the DLF Assessment Interest Group does not have a dedicated Twitter hash tag;  that would be very much welcome before the forum, as I've no doubt we're going to need one!

I agree, Jody.  The idea behind the badges (as we use them) is to provide visual identity for groups / people with similar interests.  We use them for our Postdoctoral Fellowship Program and for the E-Research Peer Network and Mentoring Group.  If there are any specific design elements you'd like incorporated, let us know and we'll try our best.

As for the hash tag, any ideas on what it should be?

How about #DLFdlag (for digital library assessment group).  Certainly open to your suggestions!!  Also, we've created LinkedIn groups for our programs as well.  I'm happy to set one up for this group if you like - to serve as a means for professional networking.  It could be an open or closed group - your choice.  Just let me know.

Thanks, Rita!  Open would be nice, I think.  Anyone opposed to that?

Also, to reduce the length of the hash tag and the redundancy, how about #DLFag  for DLF assessment group?  I am not sure what else the Digital Library Federation would assess besides Digital Libraries, but ... perhaps there's something.  Even assessing preservation strategies might be within the DL realm.  What do the rest of you think?

If there's an existing template for how DLF interest groups' hashtags are created it seems like we should follow it... if not, I have to say my brain has trouble interpreting either of those. One makes me think of flags and one makes me thing of agriculture. It's probably too long, but "DLFassess" seems like the most straightforward option. If not, I'd vote for DLFag before DLFdlag.

I agree, Joyce.  It's more important for folks to figure out what we're referring to than to save a couple characters.

I have to admit, all I see is offensive language in “DLFag.” I vote no on that one.

What about “DLFmetrics”? It’s long, but it’s fitting, and it’s easier to quickly understand than “assess.”

I'm not sure that there is a DLF template in place except that DLF precedes any other descriptive characters.  My first thought was DLF assess but then I withdrew that idea because at first glance it made me think of a donkey's rear...  Sorry, but my interpretation if someone were to look at it too quickly.

#DLFmetrics is fine with us if that is what you want to use.  DLF can tweet out an announcement about the group's hash tag and link to the website http://www.diglib.org/groups/

Might generate some conversation / interest.  Just let me know if you'd rather us NOT do that.

Thanks!  I will set up an open Linkedin group and notify you.

My brain looks at #dlfassess and leaves off the last s, which results in unfortunate name calling as well. :-)

I've also created a LinkedIn community and have sent out invitations.

Thanks to Amy Rushing for sharing this:

Check out this cool online tool created by AVPreserve to “help organizations analyze the implications of varying levels of preservation actions when dealing with audiovisual collections.” It’s called the Cost of Inaction Calculator. “COI adds a new data point to ROI and helps articulate what stands to be lost or gained in terms of access, intellect and finances based on different scenarios.” https://coi.avpreserve.com

Here’s a great little video about the Cost of Inaction.
