It seems like circular logic, i agree. It's been a while, but you
can connect
via telnet with no password using
your_c...@winlink.org, and no
password.
A password will be sent to you on your second connection.
you can add your password after-the-fact with
sudo remount
sudo nano ~/config/pat/config.json

I haven't tried this specifically, but it's worth a shot with
PatEmail, using Telnet:
winlink.org:
Connect with the system (sending a message via Telnet is okay) to
begin creating your account. Do not use a password on your first
connection. Your account's radio email address is
YOUR...@winlink.org. A message containing your password will be
posted by the system to your account. Retrieve it with a second
connection. After retrieving your password, secure login will now
be enforced by the CMS, so be sure to set your password in your
client program before your next connection try!
