Hi,

I've been messing around with my Digipi on AX25 and trying out the BBS feature. I have most of the settings done to personalize it however the only problem now is NODES is not being populated.

I left my radio on overnight and there are about 6 different nodes in my area that beacon out often. I can receive them simplex no problem but none of them showed up in the NODES option.

Does this have anything to do with trying Jheard and getting the error to the tune of "/var/lib/mheard/mheard.dat doesnt exist" ?

I've messed with this for several hours and cant for the life of me figure out the problem.

Running a digipi with DRA hat and 1.3in display with Digirig cables into a TYT-7800.

Happy weekend,
Dave KC6ZBE

Hi Dave,

That's likely my fault, there's a typo in /etc/ax25/uronode.conf

Around line 92, change "nr0" to "netrom"

#NrPort         nr0
NrPort          netrom

Click "Shell" on the DigiPi home page
login: pi
password: raspberry
sudo remount
sudo nano /etc/ax25/uronode.conf

It'll take some time for DigiPi to learn the local routing tables and remote broadcasts, but
in the end it should work,

Well, I did this yesterday and left the radio on again overnight to receive and see if this fixed it but no bueno.
A check on "NODES" on my bbs this morning revealed nothing but my node. It's been receiving for quite awhile now and local nodes have been beaconing out.

It'll take some time for DigiPi to learn the local routing tables and remote broadcasts,

I'm out of options on my end at this point. Not sure why the "NODES" list is not populating

On a side note, I was able to get the DXCluster option in my node to work. I changed the non working default ampr IP in uronode.conf to 173.255.232.93 23 and it fired right up. Throwing that out there in case anyone else wants to try out the cluster.

Ok...ok....I think it makes sense now but let my run it by you all.

So, I've had my node on for the past couple of days and still nothing generated in the "Nodes" list. There are about 5 or 6 different nodes around me beaconing out at different times. I am guessing that none of them are running AX25 with Netrom and are probably running TNC's like KPC-3, KA-Node, and the like that do not beacon out a node routing table?

I noticed that my Digipi node will beacon out the following at random times:

Nodes Beacon.jpg

However, I never see any of the other ones do the same.
Is this the type of beacon it is looking for from other nodes to create a "Nodes" routing table? Does my NODES beacon look correct?

I appreciate any and all info on this as ax25 is somewhat new to me so I'm slowly figuring all this stuff out.

Much obliged,
Dave

Hi David,

Yes the "NODES" broadcast is your routing table.

Did you make the modification to /etc/ax25/uronode.conf ?  (nr0 to netrom), then restart?

Also, you can click AXCall: [Run Linpac] then press F10 to see the AX.25
data stream.  You'll see the formatted netrom routing tables coming from other
nodes which look like,

radio: fm KM6LYW-4 to NODES ctl UI^ pid=CF(NET/ROM) len 238 14:32:50.980913
NET/ROM Routing: COOL
           KF6ANX-4  JOHN          KF6ANX-4    192
             W7VW-6  HMKRCH        KF6ANX-4    107
               W7VW  HMKRBB        KF6ANX-4    107
             W7VW-1  HMKR          KF6ANX-4    108
           KF6ANX-5  HILL          KF6ANX-5    192
            W6UHQ-4  HERALD        KF6ANX-4    144

            N6QDY-5  EDH           KF6ANX-4    144
            K6IXA-5  BULN          KF6ANX-4    146

How are you looking at your "Nodes" list?   connecting to your BBS and typing "Nodes"?
that output should look like,

km6...@digipi.org:/uronode6: nodes

Craig----- Did you make the modification to /etc/ax25/uronode.conf ?  (nr0 to netrom), then restart?

Yes. I did this several days ago.

NETROM.jpg

Craig------ How are you looking at your "Nodes" list?   connecting to your BBS and typing "Nodes"?
that output should look like,

Yes. I connect to my BBS using the AXCALL on the Digipi screen and then clicking the second option "Connect to your node". After a full 18 hours of my radio receiving different beacon broadcast from various digipeaters, bbs, etc. around me, this is what my "Nodes" list looks like:

Nodes shell.jpg

If these guys around me aren't using NETROM and are using KPC-3's, is that a possibility why a nodes route table on my end isn't being created?

Dave

Okay, everything looks right to me.  the kaltronics units do netrom.  To confirm, you do or don't
see this type of traffic on linpac?

NET/ROM Routing: SACNOD
             NC6J-2  SACBBS          NC6J-4    255
             NC6J-3  SACCHT          NC6J-4    255
           KM6LYW-4  COOL          KM6LYW-4    199

DigiPi is listening for that data to establish your local netrom routing table.

you can ask the linux kernel about the netrom routing table too,

pi@cool:~ $ netstat -A netrom -rn
Kernel NET/ROM routing table
Destination  Mnemonic  Quality  Neighbour  Iface
K6LRC-1      LASSEN    108      KF6DQU-9   ax0
K6FJC-5      RWCCA     108      KF6ANX-4   ax0
W6SCF-4      BUTANO    108      KF6ANX-4   ax0
KG6SJT-10    YCARES      1      KG6SJT-10  ax0
N6SJV-4      BEAR91    108      KF6ANX-4   ax0
KJ6VCP-4     CUESTA    108      KF6ANX-4   ax0

I wonder if the nodes near you are KA-Nodes and not netrom. KA-Nodes speak a different language and will not associate with netrom nodes.

"the kaltronics units do netrom."

This is not entirely true. Only Kantronics TNCs that are running K-Net firmware are compatible with NETROM nodes.
And there is no easy way to determine this other than watch the frequency for a while.
The KA-Nodes near me completely ignore my DigiPi netrom node (and vice-versa). They also ignore my BPQ Node.

Craig--- To confirm, you do or don't

see this type of traffic on linpac?

No. Confirming I do not see any of that kind of data. I tried the linpac route along with the command line you showed and both reveal nothing.

Scott--- I wonder if the nodes near you are KA-Nodes and not netrom.

I'm kind of leaning on what Scott is saying. I'm really starting to think these other nodes around here either aren't running NETROM or are somehow just not beaconing out the nodes route table from their end. It seems like something should've come up by now. No worries.

I wasn't too sure how the whole "nodes route table" thing worked until I read more about it. I honestly thought it worked off of the other nodes Jheard (mheard) data as they all had that option. It's no big deal, I just wanted to make sure it wasn't some kind of error I did on my end. It is what it is.

I want to thank you guys for your input and Craig, thanks for the troubleshooting tips.
Really enjoy this Digipi. It's been a fun little project to mess with!

Big 73
Dave
