Hi all,
Getting the following error message:  VARA initialization fail - no connect to VARA Command port. dial TCP 127.0.0.1:8300
Running Rasp Pi Zero 2 W. digipi 1.9 & DRA Zero Pi to Yaesu FTM 6000 on 144.99.
APRS Web Chat works fine, no issues on 144.39
I know how to set the 127 etc in Winlink - Win10 but can't figure out how to do that in digipi.

I believe the issue is that raspberry pi zero 2w does not suppport vara. Correct me if Im wrong, but I'm under the impression that Vara is only supported on raspberry pi 4 and up.

When using pat, please select "ARDOP" as your transport for HF  ("AX.25" for VHF).
Unfortunately Vara is compiled exclusively for x86 cpu's on Microsoft and the closed-source
license doesn't allow for redistribution.

Along the SE Gulf Coast, VARA-FM Winlink Gateways outnumbers  the Packet radio Gateways. Several Ops have gotten VARA-FM and VARA (HF) to run on Linux under Wine.      This would truly make the Digipi a tool for the EmComm toolbox. Baofeng or other suitable HT portable with AIOC Pi-Zero running VARA-FM standalone would be a VARA repeater easily deployed to digipeat from a zone with zero Internet. Is this on the horizon?

Hi Ken, I can't install vara because the license agreement is unacceptable as
a fellow software deveoper building similar code.  Unfortunately, VARA has
some fatal issues on the Pi,

  • x86 only
  • Windows only
  • Closed source, Proprietary
  • Unacceptable license inhibits freedom

Yes, some intrepid operators got it running on a Pi with multiple levels
of emulation, but this is simply impossible with our 512MB memory budget.

Instead of VARA we're implementing MERCURY which uses a similar
but not identical OFDM modulation technique.  All client software can
instantly use MERCURY, and we're working on implementations on the
server side.

if it helps,

Hi Craig and thanks for responding so quickly.

Maybe you can enlighten me on Mercury.  I’ve done a bit of research, and understand that it is sort of an open sourced VARA using the Orthagonal transmission methods that is way over my head.  And I understand that in crowded or difficult band conditions that it can actually out perform VARA.

But I do believe it’s an entirely different modem, like Vara or X.25 and has to pair with another modem of the same type.  In other words, a Mercury client had to converse with another Mercury and won’t be recognized by a VARA client.   I would hope I’m wrong, but think I know the answer.

Thanks for all you do

I'm excited to hear you're working on implementing Mercury. I successfully used my digipi / IC-705 set up to check into our local emcomm exercise using ARDOP and Pat. If it weren't for the leg up that digipi offers, I'm pretty sure I would have got mired in configurations and so forth, making that just too complex a task.

Thanks Craig!

That's right, Mercury is not compatible with VARA when it comes
to modulation.  They both leverage OFDM techniques, but they
wont talk to each other.

On the API/client side, the mercury guys made it so clients that
can talk to VARA modems, can instantly talk to Mercury modems,
so clients don't need to be immediately rewritten to leverage Mercury.

cool,
