...but no matter how many times I set the wifi, my DigiPi 2.1-3 falls back to the hotspot.
My wifi password does include a symbol.
Im tempted to leave it at that but the map function is cloud-dependent.
Is there a workaround for those of us who arent PiOS fluent?

Hi Loch-Ness,

DigiPi could/should allow symbols in the password (unless, I think the
symbol is a parenthesis?)

a Pi3A+ has 5G wifi

you can hookup a keyboard/console and run "sudo remount; sudo
raspi-config" and
configure wifi that way too - but I'm concerned you'll hit the same
problem, worth a try.
you can directly edit the wifi configs with "sudo nano
/etc/NetworkManager/system-connections/wlan0.nmconnection"

Using a Spectrum/router setup?

My AP is a Ubiquiti UniFi on an at&t fiber gateway.
About the console... Could you give a step-by-step example for someone who is not adept at using Linux?
Yes I need to learn it, but have to start somewhere.
Thanks.

sure,

on a PC/mac,

click Shell
password: raspberry
then type

sudo remount
sudo raspi-config

at this point  use the cursor keys for System Options -> Setup Wifi

you'll be prompted for your region (US, EU, etc), then home wifi ssid and password.

hit the tab key to select finish/save/quit and hit enter.

This is how the Raspbery Pi OS folks do wifi, which is essentially what digipi
does behind the scene.  you can also "sudo nano /etc/NetworkManager/system-connection/wlan0.nmconnection"
to directly edit the file with your wifi information.

Some wifi routers are notoriously difficult with raspberry pi, particularly when
it comes to random mac addresses, or they isolate an iot subnet, etc.

if it helps,

From raspi-config, entering my information yields the dialog  "There was an error running option S1 Wireless Lan"

The shell shows:

pi@digipi3:~ $ sudo remount
Filesystem is now writable.
pi@digipi3:~ $ sudo raspi-config
Error: No network with SSID ' (the one I entered) ' found.

...yet it found my router before.
Also, the Tab key didnt seem to have any function in the dialogs, so no obvious option to "save" before exiting.

This was done on Win11 connected to the hotspot; just for fun I connected a monitor and keyboard to the Pi (in case operating the Shell from within DigiPi isnt what you meant) but got no response.
We seem to be close, though. sudo nano is beyond my present skills.

that looks exactly like what the Spectrum/iot router setup does.  something to do with an iot subnet.

Spectrum users  have done this,

sudo remount
sudo nano  /etc/NetworkManager/NetworkManager.conf

Then append this text to the end of the file,

[device]
wifi.scan-rand-mac-address=no

if tab doesn't work, i'm not sure how/if you can press save/exit, etc?

I don't have a windows system to test with here.  I'd use a keyboard/monitor, if it's a problem.

More info on the Spectrum workaround is here, if it helps, and applies
to your situation,

Im lost once I get into sudo nano. Never used it.
Could I please pester you for a walk-through, keystroke-by-keystroke?
Thanks.

yah, linux is easy right?  when i started we were using edlin and vi -- still use vi.

sudo nano  /etc/NetworkManager/NetworkManager.conf

cursor keys to end of file
hit return at the end of the last line and type/append:

[device]
wifi.scan-rand-mac-address=no

hit ctrl-X, y, enter

(ctrl x means, exit, y means yes save buffer)

Did you leave out the .conf on the end?
You will be editing a file and that is the extension and very necessary.

Best regards,

Entered   "sudo nano  /etc/NetworkManager/NetworkManager.conf"  verbatim.

no quotes?

pi@digipi:~ $ sudo nano  /etc/NetworkManager/NetworkManager.conf

No quotes.
Interesting thing happened on my way to re-create and screenshot my attempt last night...
This morning I got a response, and followed thru:

pi@digipi3:~ $ sudo remount
Filesystem is now writable.
pi@digipi3:~ $sudo nano  /etc/NetworkManager/NetworkManager.conf

...which apparently produced two items (that didnt get screenshot) this time.
Beneath them I created another
[device]
wifi.scan-rand-mac-address=no

exited, saved to buffer.  Seems to have "taken."
Went back to DigiPi wifi settings, and entered my SSID and PW, restarted.

Hotspot gone, display says "Online" but no IP address, and I cant find it on my local network.
I can only speculate that the Pi was hung last night but behaved after a nice long power-down, or I have some other challenge going on.
I sense a lot more re-flashing in my future...

Follow-up:

Reflashed, Initialized, restarted.
Modified NetworkManager.conf
restarted
Redid raspi.config
Dialog box: "There was an error running option S1 Wireless Lan"

...and in the Shell:

pi@digipi:~ $ sudo raspi-config
Error: 802-11-wireless-security.key-mgmt: property is missing.

I had another ham dig into the PiOS and make some adjustments:

interface-name=wlan0
autoconnect=true
autoconnect-retries=0

[wifi-security]
auth-alg=open
key-mgmt=wpa-psk

pi@digipi:/etc/NetworkManager/NetworkManager/system-connections $ ls
hotspot.nmconnection  wlan0.nmconnection
pi@digipi:/etc/NetworkManager/NetworkManager/system-connections $ pwd
/etc/NetworkManager/system-connections
pi@digipi:/etc/NetworkManager/NetworkManager/system-connections $ sudo nano_wlan0.nmconnection

We were able to get the Pi3a+ to log into another network, and I was also able to later log into a smartphone hotspot.
It defaulted to the digipi hotspot once home again, but the next morning I booted up and It sees my credentials and appears to be working fine.  I can only speculate that Im tinkering at a rate the hardware/software finds challenging, and something seized.
Will continue to explore, and thanks to everyone helping that along.
