Dear Diehards

I just cut and pasted below a description of the experience / phenomena of getting a set of hearing aids fitted.

It has triggered a form of inquiry / awareness, of a difference in my experience.

Make of the words what you will.

Good morning This will be day three of new hearing aids not only new in the sense that they're brand new from the NHS but they're brand new to me.

Within our community the notion of awakening seems to accompany the idea that there will be either: new perceptions with new insights or a new way of seeing the world.

An alternative perspective on that is actually instead of anything being new ... something is dropped like the metaphor that "the scales fell away from my eyes" and now I see or we see the world for the first time in its naked awesomeness.

In a way that was the sense. An experience of a change in perception, with my hearing sense. When I first switched on the and was fitted with these new hearing aids on Tuesday roundabout 9:30 a.m. in the morning.

I already knew from my interest in Hi-Fi since aged 21 and being a Yorkshire person, at least that's where a grew up after the age of 18.

That before investing heavily in a sophisticated Hi-Fi system for listening to music. It's perhaps worthwhile getting your ears tested to see whether you can hear all these amazing pure sounds that occur above 10 or 20 kilo hertz, that the sales person suggest enhances your listening experience :) I still find this rather amusing.

Anyhow after my ears had been tested and the audiologist showed me the results on two charts one for my left ear one for my right ear.

My hearing loss at my age was defined as normal wear and tear but still put me as having moderate  loss especially over 3,000 kilohertz so low frequencies and frequencies in open till about 8 kHz my hearing was just about ok was borderline normal and just about being some loss.

The chart there was a steady decline in the sensitivity of my hearing function after 2k hz.

The collective sum of my (hearing Ensemble) the actual eardrum and the space between there and wherever hearing manifests inside one's brain 🤔 before one makes sense of it.  had declined to the point where above 4 kilohertz that was little registration of any sounds at all.

Imagine the delight then, the sheer surprise on receipts of these hearing aids ~ the restoration of these frequencies or the apparent restoration of these frequencies to my experience of hearing of sounds.

This in a sense can be likened to a kind of reawakening or awakening of an aspect of my self ~ the experience of being in the world.

Is this similar maybe and I say maybe, 'cos I can only speak for myself to the idea of awakening in a larger sense but actually I'm amused and I can't help but saying that's am-us-ed.

So here I am trying to make sense of having come to a better sense of one of my senses and maybe that's all part and parcel of when one comes to one senses. As when one wakes up in the morning.

Anyway I'm going to stop now, paste this into diehard's and see if this content is remotely interesting to anyone else. 🙏💙🙏

Rob,
Thanks for sharing the awakening to the sense of hearing at specific decibels.
What about if you were outside and you hear the clangs of the grocery cart in a store, or the wild honking of someone on the street? Does that sound louder than normal or its sounds normal?
Thanks

Thanks Rob, and good luck with your hearing first and foremost. An interesting question you raise, which seems to resonate here. It offers this up: waking up is waking up to our being asleep. -Dan
