Everyone,

I felt it important to raise a question about the source of the words and impressions shared in videos from scientists that are now appearing on youtube. As shared earlier, I found one that really impressed me, involving Richard Feynman, for example. In looking at its details, it was clear that it was really a physics series presented in the remarkable style of Richard Feynman, who was good at explaining things if you had sufficient background. There is an entire collection of these now from a single source, all done recently, even as Dr. Feynman has been dead since the 1980's. And they seem to be multiplying with new ones coming out each day.

There are other Feynman videos that imply the views expressed are his, including one that came out a few days ago saying there are no particles, you are not a thing etc. I really question whether he ever said that, based on several videos I watched of his talks and conversations.

The same may apply to the Penrose videos of late (The Penrose Way). In looking at its details, it follows a similar pattern of multiplying videos that has no direct connection to Penrose per se. I looked at some other videos of him speaking directly, even recent ones (he's  now 90 I believe), and he gives the definite impression that he is a physicalist (everything emerges from physical matter). So I can't say anything certain as to whether he said the words, but the circumstances lead me to question whether this is true.

To me, this does not take away from the video content itself, it seems to resonate in many ways. But there may be a misleading impression created that these Nobel scientists fully shared these views. Again, it feels worth at least raising the question. I think it is unfortunate if these concerns are true, since it only detracts from what the videos might be trying to say.

All,

I forgot to add that Paul and I conferred on this matter before I sent out the email here. We agreed it was worth raising the questions, unfortunate as it might be.

Hi Dan, Diehards,

Dan, you said:  I think it is unfortunate if these concerns are true, since it only detracts from what the videos might be trying to say

I couldn't agree more. These videos are popping up all over the place, including YouTube. In fact, in recent threads over the past couple of months, many of the videos posted in this very group, purporting to be others' words (Alan Watts, Keanu Reeves, as two quick examples), were not actually the individual's own words, but AI generated content masquerading as authentic.

While I agree that it may not take away from the content, the manipulative nature of many of these videos in order to get engagement/likes/views seems to undermine the aim of the content itself, in a certain way.

I find it very disturbing, and for one, I'm surprised at how many people are falling for it.

Scott, All,

Scott, after reading your email, I unexpectedly happened upon something from Richard Feynman himself, which he actually said, about the meaning of life. I found it resonating with what is at times pointed to here, openness to what is true. Which says to me, there may be no fixed vantage points to hold onto......

What then, is the meaning of it all? What can we say to dispel the mystery of existence?

If we take everything into account, not only what the ancients knew, but all of what we know today that they didn't know, then I think we must frankly admit we do not know.

But in admitting this, we have probably found the open channel.

Feynman was a scientist, so he never learned how to resolve existential koans in the way that Zen people commonly do. The intellect is like a tiny laptop computer sitting on top of a huge main frame computer that runs the whole show. The laptop only generates and manipulates images, ideas, and symbols, so it can't resolve questions that go beyond duality. When a human contemplates a question that the intellect cannot resolve, the contemplation drives the inquiry to a deeper level of mind where all existential answers can be found. If someone asks a Zen Master, "What is the meaning of life?" s/he will find that an easy question to answer, but other people may not understand the answer.😁
