Well so much for that.  Doesn’t look like Melton will be pitching anywhere, at least for the next month. Sigh.

Right-hander Troy Melton unavailable to pitch for Tigers in spring training games due to general arm soreness

The article is paywalled so I didn't read it, but is this possibly part of the reason for signing Verlander? I assume the Tigers didn't just learn of this "arm soreness" today.

I think the JV signing was in reaction to Olson being out for the season.

The article didn't offer much detail yet (It says it will be updated) but Hinch says they're going to get him checked out. He says "I'll have a better update when I know more".  So it sounds like they just did just find out about it, given they're just in the process of doing tests etc.

At this point you have to assume your pitching prospects will need TJS eventually if they haven't had it already (and sometimes pitchers have multiple TJ surgeries).  Olson hasn't had TJS, but he's having major shoulder surgery instead.  He'll probably need TJS after he comes back from the shoulder surgery.  🙁

Let's hope Melton is ok.  Just being pessimistic (and maybe realistic).

By the way, Framber Valdez has never had TJS (he's 32).  I read on his Wikipedia page that when he was a teenager being scouted teams were staying away from him because they thought he would need TJS, but he never had the surgery.

Melton has “elbow inflammation”…uh-oh.
See you next year, Troy.
