This afternoon's lineup in Yankee Stadium frying pan vs. righty Will Warren (3.75 ERA in 16 starts):

  1. Kevin McGonigle (L) SS
  2. Dillon Dingler (R) DH
  3. Kerry Carpenter (L) RF
  4. Riley Greene (L) LF
  5. Colt Keith (L) 3B
  6. Spencer Torkelson (R) 1B
  7. Zach McKinstry (L) 2B
  8. James Outman (L) CF

Troy Melton (2.39 ERA in 6 starts) on the mound for the Tigers.   Melton doesn't have a lot of Ks but he has been getting more swings and misses lately and has continued to induce weak contact.  He has allowed 7 homers in 45.2 IP but he doesn't walk many hitters so he's been limiting the damage.

We'll see how he and Warren handle the excessive heat.  They might both have shortish outings.

Tork has quietly been hitting pretty well recently.  He's hitting .273/.360/.500 (.860 OPS) in the past 2 weeks and .220/.301/.488 (.789 OPS) in the past month (that's not great, but it's better than normal for Tork).

Nice to see Outman hit one out last night.  He's hitting .206/.308/.471 (.779 OPS) with 3 homers since joining the Tigers.  That's more production from CF than we normally get.

Let's get the sweep!

Well, it's a pitcher's duel so far.  Tigers lead 1-0 after 4.  McGonigle with a 422-ft solo shot to RF in the 3rd.  It was on a first-pitch hanging curveball from Warren.

Melton with 60 pitches through 4.  In the heat, I don't expect him to go much longer.  We're going to need the bullpen to pitch well.

Tigers up 2-0 in the bottom of the 7th.  Melton still in there at 84 pitches.
The bullpen better not blow this, but 2 runs isn't much BISN.

Hinch tried Anderson as closer and he gave up a solo homer to Rosario (can't stand that guy) and wild pitched home Chisholm after Chisholm stole 2nd and 3rd against him.

Tigers couldn't score the ghost runner in the top of the 10th.  Outman popped out with McKinstry at 2nd, but McKinstry advanced to 3rd on a wild pitch. Rogers struck out with McKinstry at 3rd and 1 out and McGonigle flied out.
Montero is in for the bottom of the 10th.  Of course, the Yankees have bunted the lead runner over to 3rd with 1 out, something the Tigers didn't even try.

Montero somehow gets out of the 10th with the winning run at 3rd and 1 out.  He struck out Cabrera, walked Rice intentionally and struck out Sanchez. Whew!

Anderson was a complete deer in the headlights trying to close the game out in the 9th.  He didn't even pay attention to Chisholm on the bases.
Maybe Hinch should have tried Montero as closer in the 9th.  Hinch clearly didn't trust Finnegan or Jansen to close it out.  I'm surprised he didn't try Brieske.  Our bullpen is a disaster zone.

On to the top of the 11th we go.

Finnegan would have been my choice, but given Montero was available he'd have been my #2.

Camilo Doval has walked a couple of Tigers (one intentional) in the 11th to load the bases. Hopefully Tork can come through.

Great disciplined at-bats by Lee and Tork against the hard-throwing, but wild Doval.  Tork walks on a 3-2 pitch with the base loaded to drive in the go-ahead run.  Tigers up 3-2...and now McKinstry with a bases-loaded single on a 100-mph fastball, plus an error on the play, scores 3 runs!  Tigers up 6-2 going into the bottom of the 11th.  Wow, did not see that coming!  4 runs should be enough. BISN for Montero, you'd hope.

I was also cursing Hinch for taking Carpenter out of the game earlier, which forced Vierling to bat in the 11th against a righty with the lead runner at 1st and 1 out.  Vierling hit a grounder right to the SS so the runner had to hold, but fortunately the Yankees had a 2-out meltdown after that as Doval couldn't find the plate.

What amazing pitching by the Tigers starters in this series.  Mize, Skubal and Melton were lights-out.  We might have one of the best rotations in baseball right now and we're not even sniffing contention.  What a waste.  Sigh.

Funny, I wanted the Tigers to sign Doval a couple of years ago, but he hasn't been very good for the Yankees.  His control was terrible today.
Relievers are a crapshoot.
