This afternoon's lineup vs. lefty Trevor Rogers (4.17 ERA in 19 starts):

  1. Kevin McGonigle (L) SS
  2. Hao-Yu Lee (R) 3B
  3. Dillon Dingler (R) C
  4. Riley Greene (L) LF
  5. Eduardo Valencia (R) DH
  6. Spencer Torkelson (R) 1B
  7. Matt Vierling (R) RF
  8. Javier Báez (R) CF

Apart from Vierling, potentially not a bad lineup vs. a lefty.  Of course, the Tigers will probably go from scoring 14 runs to getting shut out.

Will this be Tarik Skubal's final start with the Tigers?  Let's hope he goes out in style.  He was as dominant as he's ever been in his last start.

Mini-factoid:  O's starter Trevor Rogers is cousin of one-time Tigers' OF prospect Cody Ross, who came up in the Tigers' system in the Randy Smith era just before Dave Dombrowski took over.  Ross actually went on to have a decent career in the majors with 125 career homers and lifetime .768 OPS.  Dombrowski traded Ross to the Dodgers for lefty reliever Steve Colyer in 2004.  Colyer had a 6.47 ERA with the Tigers in 2004 and only pitched in the majors one more season.  Not Dombrowski's finest trade.

Good reverse voodoo as Vierling has a double and a triple today. But he was removed for a PR so I assume he got hurt running out the triple.

Not to mention the Tigers/Skubal are the ones on the good end of a shutout so far - 5-0 Tigers after five innings.

Skubal has given up 3 long flyouts that would have been homers in Camden Yards and Javy Baez , but he's pitching a 2-hit shutout through 6 with 6 Ks and 0 walks.  Tigers lead 5-0 in the bottom of the 6th.

Vierling was actually having a good game with a double and a triple, but he pulled a hamstring on the triple and was removed from the game for McKinstry.  Looks like a possible trip to the IL for Vierling.

Nothing like getting beaten 14-0 and then having to face Skubal the very next afternoon.

And Javy Baez made an error in CF, but fortunately didn't lead to any damage.

And now Vierling's replacement, McKinstry, hits a 2-run double in the 6th after terrible fielding by the O's put 2 runners on.  Tigers lead 7-0.

Skubal has thrown 74 pitches through 6.  I'm guessing he'll go 7 innings even if he has quick 7th.  I don't think the Tigers will want to risk him pitching into the 8th, assuming they are thinking about trading him.

Skubal laboring a bit in the 7th.  The annoying Taveras with a 2-out, RBI single with runners at the corners to cut the lead to 7-1.  McGonigle made a great play at SS earlier in the inning that probably saved another run being scored.

That's it, Skubal is coming out, Finnegan is coming in.  Hang on to your hats...

I assume there was an extended standing O for Skubal when he left in anticipation of it possibly being his last start in a Tigers uniform?

Good grief, Finnegan almost blows the lead.  Tigers up 7-5 going into the bottom of the 7th.
Anderson had to come in to save Finnegan's butt and got Alonso to foul out to end the inning.

Finnegan allowed 2 of Skubal's inherited runners to score with 2 outs so Skubal ends up being charged with 3 runs in 6.2 IP.
I think Jeremiah Jackson wore out Finnegan with an epic 12-pitch at-bat in which he walked.

So now we have a 2-run BISN...scary.  Please don't blow this for Skubal.

This is why the Tigers seriously getting into the playoff chase often feels like fantasy, win-loss record aside. The pen is just horrendous.

I see Anderson has walked the lead off guy in the 8th. Sigh.

They blew it for Skubal.  7-7 in the top of the 9th.

Tigers had a chance to open up a little breathing room in the 7th with Keith at 3rd and 1 out, but Dingler struck out, they intentionally walked Greene, and Valencia hit the ball fairly well but flied out to LF to leave them stranded.  Nevertheless, a 7-0 lead should have been more than enough to hold.

Harris has no clue how to construct a bullpen.  He seems averse to "swing and miss" relief pitchers.
He really thought Drew Anderson would be something?  The dude is just full of mistake pitches.
There were warning signs with Finnegan last year after he got hurt.  Wasn't the same pitcher, but he's never been a guy who could blow it buy hitters.
Jansen is just old.
Plus, they sent DeJesus to Toledo after he was pitching well.

I wish we kept Montero in the bullpen.

LOL, now it's 9-9 in the bottom of the 11th.  Tork just hit a 2-run homer to start the 11th to tie it.  Crazy game!

Tigers lose 10-9 in 12.  Valencia had a couple of chances to be a hero but failed.  Turned back into a pumpkin.

Our bullpen is a complete disaster.  Thanks, Scott Harris!

Let the trading begin.
