Casey Mize will be activated and will start Saturday's game vs. the Blue Jays in Detroit.
Brenan Hanifee or Ty Madden (more likely Hanifee) will likely be optioned after tonight's game to make room.

Connor Seabold was activated from the IL today and Ricky Vanasco sent back to Toledo.  Vanasco was awful with the Tigers after dominating AAA hitters earlier this season.  His stuff doesn't seem to translate against major league hitters.  Not good enough command.

Will Vest is on rehab assignment with Toledo.
Beau Brieske is on rehab assignment with Toledo.

Tarik Skubal has started some light throwing sessions.

Positive report overall… But again, I’d have to feel sorry for Hanifee if he is sent down. Like the last couple years, generally pitching well. Yet somehow the odd man out.

Had a clean inning to start tonight‘s game, lowering his ERA to 0.96!  Who normally gets sent down for that?

Mize better be ready to go deep into tomorrow's game because Ty Madden left tonight's game in the third after facing only two batters after being hit on the right forearm by a line drive. Madden was supposed to be the bulk guy tonight. Instead, Smith and now Anderson have picked up most of the innings.

It's 2-2 in the top of the eighth.

Tork walks it off with a 2-out single in the 9th that scores Vierling.  Tigers win 3-2.  Tork back to .200!

Too bad Madden got hurt.  Smith, Anderson and Jansen with 7 combined shutout innings in relief.

Something mildly amusing to me…

Anderson was a very successful starter in the Korean league, which is of course why he got the contract from the Tigers in the off-season. In fact, he was the first starting pitcher they signed. Way before Valdez or JV.

And yet, when like half a dozen starting pitchers go on the DL, Hinch still won’t just put the guy into the rotation and see how it goes. Instead, he keeps the opposition on their toes by inserting Anderson randomly for 4 innings in the middle of the game. Genius! :-)

When you watch Anderson pitch, you can see why the Tigers were interested in him.  He might be the hardest thrower on the team next to Skubal.  His command and location gets very shaky at times, but if he can tighten it up he could be an asset.
I wouldn't mind replacing Flaherty with him as #5 starter for a while just to see how he does as a starter.

Sure on Flaherty… But the Tigers have done like 5 bullpen games the last week and a half. Why wouldn’t they just give Anderson a start straight up? They signed him for $7 million (with a club option for a second year) because of his success in Korea *as a starter*.

No idea.  They show no interest in using Anderson as a starter.. They don't even seem interested in even using Anderson like they've been using Madden, who has been sort of a quasi-starter in that they let him pitch 5-6 innings after using an "opener" and maybe another reliver to try to gain some sort of matchup advantage against the top-of-the-order of the other team in the 1st and 2nd inning.  They probably hoped Madden could go 4, 5 or 6 innings vs. the Jays but he got lifted early because of the injury.  Anderson didn't even come in the game tonight until after Burch Smith pitched 2 innings after Madden had to come out.
