Rogers has had his moments with the Tigers.  But he’ll be 31 right after opening day, and coming off two consecutive poor seasons.  Should we cut him loose?  Valencia couldn’t be worse as a back-up, I don’t think.

Keep Rogers for the postseason obviously.  Can’t substitute for him now.  I mean afterwards.

Yeah, for sure, cut him loose. I think he’s pretty popular among players and maybe even fans like when they did the Jake Rogers look-alike contest, etc.…

But he earned $2.6 million this year. Surely the Tigers can find a cheaper and more productive back up catcher than that for 2026.

Rogers did have a little run after the AS break where he hit ok, but his playing time became more sporadic because Dingler became the obvious #1 guy.  Dingler was a workhorse behind the plate down the stretch.
Most backup catchers can't hit so Rogers not being much of a hitter isn't unusual for most teams.

I wish Valencia had gotten a chance in Detroit at some point in the 2nd half to see if he'd be more than a AAAA player, but Hinch wasn't going to jettison Rogers for Valencia especially since there are defensive concerns about Valencia behind the plate (Valencia plays a lot of 1B as well).

I'd be surprised if Rogers has much of a future with the Tigers.  Dingler seems established (for now) as the starter.  The Tigers are deep in catching prospects.  Of course, if you're an old enough Tiger fan you can recall a time when the Tigers thought they were flush with catching talent and traded Chris Hoiles (23.8 career WAR) for Fred Lynn as Lynn declined. So, well Dingler looks solid to me, who to use to back him up doesn't seem to be an easy choice.

I did wonder about the Tigers sticking with Rogers given how well Nido performed in place of Rogers when Rogers was on the IL, but I realize that Nido's hitting when he with the Tigers was completely out of character for him.  I also have no idea if the Tigers had the ability to send Rogers down or would have had to DFA him.

For whatever reason, projecting hitting for catchers seems to be particularly iffy.

Tigers have Valencia, Thayron Liranzo and Josue Briceno as their top up-and-coming catching prospects (well, Valenica is 25 going on 26 in January so technically he isn't really a prospect, although catchers can often take longer to develop).  Liranzo had a poor offensive season in AA, although defensively he's regarded as being decent and he's still only 21.  He's got too much swing-and-miss in his approach.
Briceno is a very good power hitting prospect and very young for his level (he's only 20 and in AA), but he's still learning a lot behind the plate.  Briceno has also played some 1B, but the Tigers seem committed to having him develop his catching skills.  Briceno is probably 2-3 years away from being a major league catcher.

The Tigers did have a very good catching prospect in 19-year-old Enrique Jimenez, but Harris traded him to the Twins for Paddack.  Doh!

You'll probably see the Tigers bring in a couple of veteran catchers (Tomas Nido types) next spring to challenge for the #2 job.
I hope Valencia will get a look but he could be a Rule V pick by somebody else if the Tigers don't add him to the 40-man roster in the offseason.

Last year the Tigers lost catcher Liam Hicks as a Rule V pick by the Marlins.  Hicks hit .247/.346/.346 (.692 OPS, 94 OPS+) for the Marlins as their #2 catcher this year.  Not bad for a #2 catcher.
