On Thursday, the Yankees scored a run in the top of the ninth to beat the Tigers in Lakeland, 4-3. Today, the Tigers went to St. Petersburg, and they humiliated the Yankees, 12-1.
In the top of the first, Kerry Carpenter singled, Colt Keith singled, Spencer Torkelson homered to drive in Mr. Carpenter and Mr. Keith, Dillon Dingler singled, and Javy Baez doubled to drive in Mr. Dingler.
In the top of the second, Austin Slater walked, and Matt Vierling homered.
Riley Greene led off the top of the third with a home run. That gave the Tigers a 7-0 lead.
In the top of the eighth, Gage Workman doubled, Corey Julks singled, Ben Malgeri was hit by a pitch to load the bases, Jordan Yost homered to drive in Mr. Workman, Mr. Julks, and Mr. Malgeri. Then, Max Anderson singled, Trei Cruz doubled, and Jake Rogers hit a sacrifice fly to drive in Mr. Anderson.
In the bottom of the ninth, Zach Short doubled, and scored on a single by Jonathan Ornelas.
Framber Valdez gave up four hits in five scoreless innings. He struck out three.
Kyle Finnegan pitched a perfect inning in the sixth, with two strikeouts.
Kenley Jansen pitched a perfect inning in the seventh, with one strikeout.
Sean Guenther gave up one hit and struck out two in the eighth, but he did not get the last out of the inning.
Drew Anderson pitched the last 1 1/3 innings of this game. He gave up one run, on three htis and two walks. He struck out three.
Tomorrow the Tigers will host the Phillies. Chuck King will start for the Phillies, and Jack Flaherty will start for the Tigers.
