Today's lineup vs. 23-year-old rookie lefty Connelly Early who has a 1.88 ERA in 3 major league starts.   Early is the Red Sox #6 prospect.
He was recently called up to replace the injured Dustin May.  Early doesn't have an overpowering fastball.  He's regarded more as a future #4/#5 starter.
So I predict he'll strike out at least 10 Tigers.

  1. Jahmai Jones (R) DH
  2. Gleyber Torres (R) 2B
  3. Wenceel Pérez (S) RF
  4. Spencer Torkelson (R) 1B
  5. Riley Greene (L) LF
  6. Dillon Dingler (R) C
  7. Andy Ibáñez (R) 3B
  8. Javier Báez (R) SS
  9. Parker Meadows (L) CF

Why is Perez still batting 3rd?

Keider Montero starting for the Tigers.  Montero could get destroyed in Fenway.

Sure enough, Jones leads off with a single and is left stranded as Torres and Perez both struck out swinging on curveballs, and Tork popped out.

Early is throwing his fastball 95-96 mph so maybe he's got more of a fastball than the scouting reports say.

A solo homer is almost the only way the Tigers can score.  Forget them putting together a string of hits.

Likes like another strike out fest.

Early has already struck out 3 of the Tigers' first 5 hitters.  Greene struck out again in the 2nd.  He now has 201 on the season.  He's shattering the Tigers' single-season K record.  Riley thinks the strike outs "don't matter" and it "is what it is" that he strikes out so much.

Montero gave up a single to Abreu in the 1st but struck out the other 3 hitters.

STOP STRIKING OUT!  Ibanez strikes out as well in the 2nd.  That's 4 Ks for Early in 2 innings.

What are the Tigers' hitting coaches teaching?  The "control the zone" philosophy seems to have completely gone out the window.  They all seem to be following Javy Baez's philosophy.

Why no Malloy against a lefty who was in AAA recently?  Malloy was beating up on pitchers in AAA.

Honestly, I would bench Greene against lefties.

Javy Baez saves Montero's butt in the 2nd with a great diving catch on a sinking blooper to LF to end the inning with 2 runners on.

Montero also got lucky in the 3rd as Torres caught a 112-mph scorcher off the bat of Yoshida to end the inning.

Sox lead 1-0 after 3.

Tigers have struck out 5 times vs. Early through 3.  Meadows struck out in the 3rd.  So Early is half way there to 10.

It sucks that the Tigers have to start Meadows against a lefty but honestly they need Baez at SS and Meadows in CF for defense.  The rest of the lineup needs to produce to cover for them.

Hinch doesn't like Jones's defense in the outfield so he starts him at DH and benches Malloy.  I'd rather sacrifice some defense for offense at this point.
Put Jones in LF for Greene against a lefty and start Malloy at DH.  Not starting the righty Malloy against a lefty rookie in Fenway Park is idiotic.

Another strikeout for Early in the 4th.  Torres took a totally hittable fastball over the heart of the plate for strike 3.  Sigh.
Perez also got a meatball over the plate and hit a mediocre flyball to CF.

I actually think you could combine Toledo and Erie's lineups and they'd do better than the Tigers.

Sox lead 1-0 after 4.
It's a strikeout fest for both teams.  Montero has 6 Ks and Early has 7 Ks through 4.1 innings.  The Sox have to be frustrated because they've had some chances to beat up on Montero but he's pitched out of jams thanks to some good defense by the Tigers.

By the way, that Rafaela guy on the Sox is becoming very annoying in a Steven Kwan way.  He's hitting .375 vs. the Tigers this year.

Oh boy, Montero being lifted for Hurter after striking out the leadoff man in the bottom of the 5th.  Hang on to your hats...it's bullpen time for 4+ innings.

Nice job from Montero.  His defense helped him out a lot, but he had 7 Ks and 0 walks in 4.1 IP.  At least he didn't walk himself into trouble.

The Sox brought in rookie lefty Payton Tolle to start the 6th.  Perez singled to lead off the inning.  Tork strikes out and Greene grounds into a DP.  Tork had a meatball 91-mph fastball on the first pitch and he swung and missed at it.  Tork struck out on a slider outside the plate.  Awful hitting.

Hurter is still in to start the bottom of the 6th.  Is Hinch pressing his luck?

Tigers lead 2-1 in the top of the 8th.  Jones, Torres and Perez due up.  Can we please get some BISN?

Hinch pushing the right buttons with the bullpen today so far.  Holton faces 3 lefties in the 8th and gets them all out.  Holton struck out the last hitter in the 7th as well.  Perez with an excellent catch to save Holton for the 2nd out.

Tork, Greene and Dingler due up in the top of the 9th.  Not expecting much.

Tigers are in the playoffs and Skubal should get a rest tomorrow so he can pitch in game 1 of the playoffs.
I don't care about trying to win the division if Cleveland loses tonight, just rest Skubal.

Great job by the pitchers and defense today.  The offense still gets an "F" except for Jones.

Javy's great catch saved the season and Perez's sliding catch in RF also prevented things from getting very scary.

His last 2 at-bats became increasingly bad, but he did have a good at-bat in the 5th.  He actually laid off a couple of way outside pitches and then drove a low and in pitch for a single to keep the inning going (Meadows then walked and Jones hit the 2-run 2-out single).

His last at-bat in the 9th was vintage undisciplined Baez.  He went up there only one thought of hacking at every pitch and struck out on 3 pitches out of the zone.  He got blown away by a 96-mph fastball up in the zone.

Today's lineup vs. righty Gavin Williams, who has a 1.06 ERA vs. the Tigers in 3 starts this year.  The Tigers are hitting .139 against him with 29 Ks in 17 innings.  Woof!

  1. Parker Meadows CF
  2. Gleyber Torres 2B
  3. Kerry Carpenter DH
  4. Spencer Torkelson 1B
  5. Riley Greene LF
  6. Wenceel Pérez RF

Williams has a high walk rate.  A lot of his breaking pitches end up out of the zone, but he gets hitters chase them.  The Tigers' hitters need to be more disciplined against him and stop chasing, but I'm not optimistic.
The Tigers have to try to get to Williams early before the parade of tough relievers comes in.

The Cleveland lineup is not scary at all, but as we know, Kwan and Ramirez can be a 2-man wrecking crew against us and the Guardians always seem to have some scrubby hitter come up with a key hit against us.
Skubal should be focused (no more goofy fielding plays), but can we give him some support for a change?

Go Tigers!

Small thing but I'm glad Baez is starting instead of Sweeney at SS.  Normally, Hinch would do his usual LH against the righty thing but Sweeney has really shown nothing at the plate.

Javy can still get the occasional key hit like he did at Fenway on the weekend...and I'd rather have him there defensively as well.

Absolutely, you've got to start Baez given the options.  Sweeney is unplayable.
Baez has had his usual share of horrible at-bats lately and is having an awful 2nd half (Hinch has alluded to Baez playing through injuries) , but to his credit he made a season-saving catch the other day and hit a 3-run homer vs. Boston on Sunday to give us the lead at the time before Paddack blew it and Hinch gave up.

Hey, we got a 1st inning run, thanks to shoddy defense by the Guardians and a clutch 2-out RBI single by Tork.
Of course, Greene struck out to end the inning.

Tigers lead 1-0 after 1.  Skubal with 2 Ks in the 1st, including J-Ram on a nasty 3-2 change-up.  Skubal throwing 100-mph already.

Baez singled and Meadows walked (good at-bat) to lead off the 3rd.  Torres worked the count to 3-1 but swung and missed at ball 4 on a high sweeper (he probably thought he could hit a homer on it).  On the 3-2 pitch (a 99-mph fastball) Torres grounded into a tailor-made 6-4-3 double play.  Baez took 3rd.  Carpenter worked the count to 3-2 but struck out swinging to leave Baez stranded.  We had Williams on the ropes, but let him off the hook.  Sigh.

Tigers lead 1-0 in the bottom of the 3rd.

Still 1-0 but Skubal has put the first 2 runners on in the 4th but in typical annoying Cleveland fashion.  A little infield roller between Skubal & Torres and a walk to Ramirez.

Today's lineup vs. righty Tanner Bibee, who has a 0.95 ERA in 3 starts vs. the Tigers this year.  The Tigers are hitting .179 against him with just 2 extra base hits (both doubles).  I know the Cleveland starters are good, but our hitters turn them into a bunch of Tarik Skubals.

  1. Parker Meadows (L) CF
  2. Gleyber Torres (R) 2B
  3. Kerry Carpenter (L) DH
  1. Wenceel Pérez (S) RF
  2. Dillon Dingler (R) C
  3. Zach McKinstry (L) 3B
  4. Javier Báez (R) SS

Same lineup as yesterday, which was lucky to score 2 runs (both runs were unearned).
The Tigers basically have 3 #9 hitters in the lineup (Meadows, McKinstry and Baez).  Hinch seems determined to bat Meadows leadoff.
Why not be bold and give Jones and/or Malloy a start?  Sacrifice some defense for potentially better offense.

Once again, Greene needs to take advantage of facing the righty starter before the lefty relievers start coming in.
Torres needs to wake up.  He was our borderline offensive MVP in the first half, but he's pulled a disappearing act in the 2nd half and lately.
He seems way too anxious about coming up with a big hit rather than doing what he did best earlier in the season, which was being patient and making good contact.

Casey Mize starting for the Tigers.  He's been pretty good in his recent starts.  I'm sure he's fired up to pitch well since he was left off the playoff roster last year.  Tigers only used 1 reliever yesterday while the Guardians used Gaddis, Sabrowski, and their closer Smith.  If Mize struggles early, it might be good to bring in Melton or even K. Montero.  We'll see.

Go Tigers, let's avoid a game 3!

Peter

Cleveland picking up where they left off defensively yesterday as they inexplicably start the rookie DeLauter in CF.  Not rookie, as in first season - rookie as in his major league debut!  He promptly drops a Torres fly ball with Meadows on first to start the game.  Love it!

Carp, Tork and Greene all struck out to leave the runners stranded.
Carp took a curveball right over the plate for strike 3 on a 3-2 pitch.  He was looking for a fastball and got totally fooled by Bibee.
Tork had a high fastball he could have pounded but he couldn't catch up with it.  Judge or Ohtani probably crush it, but we don't have any hitters like that, do we?
Greene struck out on a high pitch as usual.

So the annoying Valera gets a high fastball and hits it for a solo homer, unlike Tork who couldn't catch up with it.  Valera > Torkelson.
Guardians up 1-0 in the 1st.

So frustrating that none of them can make contact and put the ball in play.  K's are worse than other outs :-)

And now Valera makes contact and hits it over the fence.  1-0 Guardians.

If you're going to hit a lot of homers and draw a lot of walks you can tolerate strikeouts, but the Tigers' hitters aren't hitting enough homers or drawing enough walks.  As bad as he is, even Javy Baez has a better approach with runners on base than Carpenter, Tork and Greene.

The wind is blowing in heavily from rightfield and Valera still launched it for a homer.  He crushed a 94-mph fastball up in the zone.
Mize got saved by the wind as Manzardo hit what looked like a homer to CF but Meadows caught it.  The wind totally saved us there.

If Cleveland can call up a rookie to make his debut in the playoffs, let's call up McGonigle and Clark.  I'd rather give them a chance than watch anymore of Carpenter, Tork and Greene fail in the clutch.

Is it just me or is the Cleveland crowd kind of annoying, obsessively cheering over every ball?

What a bunch of BS! They reviewed mckinstry to Third Base and they call him out and they also said the second run didn't count.

Mize walks J-Ram to lead off the bottom of the 4th and Hinch yanks him.  Captain Hook!
Holton is in.  Let's hope Michael's praise of Holton stands up.  We need the bullpen to keep thinks in check for 4+ innings now.

Let's score some frickin' runs!

Hinch doing his chess thing again with so many LH's in the Cleveland line-up.  Sure hope it doesn't backfire with the pen having to go 5 innings.  Especially when the Tigers don't actually have a lead yet (thanks to the lame NY video review team).

Tigers have runners at 1st and 2nd with 2 outs (after a Carp single and a Tork walk) and Greene is batting.  Cleveland is bringing in the lefty Sabrowski to face Greene.  Be bold, Hinch, and pinch hit Jones...fat chance.

By the way, the umpire sucks again.  He called Torres out on strike 3 that wasn't even close.

Greene lined out to CF on the first pitch to end the 5th.  2 more runners left on base.  At least Greene had a good swing against the lefty and didn't strike out.

1-1 in the bottom of the 5th.

Against the lefty Sabrowski, Perez swung at ball 4 to lead off the top of the 6th and popped out.  Dingler drew a walk in a nice at-bat.
Hinch let the lefty McKinstry bat against the lefty and predictably McKinstry struck out.  The righties Jones, Malloy and Ibanez, who all hit lefties pretty well, are all stuck on the bench.  WTF?

The righty Gaddis coming in to face Baez.

Baez got another single to advance Dingler to 2nd.  Meadows flied out to CF to leave 2 more runners on.

Can we bring Miggy out of retirement?  He might be able to punch it through into RF with runners in scoring position.

If McKinstry comes out of the game, who plays 3rd base?  I guess Ibanez.

For what it's worth, McKInstry has a .854 OPS vs LH's.  Only .746 vs RH's.  Weird reverse splits.

Ibanez or you bring in Sweeney to play SS and move Baez over to 3B.   That was a scoring chance.  You don't leave in McKinstry against a tough lefty there.  Or. you have McKinstry try to bunt.

When are Cleveland fans not annoying? They've been annoying since the team started to be good in the 1990s. I remember going to Tigers-Cleveland games at Tiger Stadium and there would be lots of CLE fans who couldn't get tickets at sold-out Jacobs Field. At one of those games, there was a woman carrying around a lifesize cutout of Omar Vizquel, which was pretty annoying to me and probably anyone who was in her general vicinity. I suppose it could've been worse — the cutout could've been of a larger player like Albert Belle or Jim Thome.

I think Tork needs to be moved down in the line-up.  Just cannot get a clutch hit. I always feel he's overanxious.  Runners at the corners and no one out and all he could manage was a weak pop out to short LF.  And of course he has K'd in a couple key moments in this series already.

And here is Hinch pinch-hitting for Riley with Jones. Wow!

Tigers have let Cleveland off the hook over and over.   A simple sac fly in a couple of the innings would have them in the lead, even without the disputed overturn call.

Jones and Perez struck out, but Tork was the main culprit.  At least Jones and Perez put up pretty good at-bats before striking out.  Tork was terrible.

No problem with Hinch batting Jones for Greene against the lefty in that situation, although Jones should have pinch hit for McKinstry earlier.
Jones worked a walk, but the ump hosed him.  Greene probably would have struck out on 3 pitches.

McKinstry moved to left field and Ibanez came in to play third with Greene and Jones out of the game. McKinstry caught a foul fly near the stands for the first out, then Ibanez had a difficult play at third for the second out. The ball does seem to find defensive subs or guys who change positions. The rookie DeLauter then lined out to center.

Still 1-1 in the eighth.

I know Jones isn't that good defensively in the OF, but I would have left him in LF.  We might have needed him to hit again later.  He's been our best hitter lately and he should have walked to load the bases in the 7th.  Or maybe they should have let Greene bat and had Jones pinch hit for Perez?
Perez fouled off a bunch of pitches but struck out on a 96-mph above his shoulders.

And we left McKinstry stranded at 2B to end the 8th.  Javy at least moved McKinstry over.  Unfortunately Meadows had to face Cade Smith and Meadows predictably struck out.

The overturn call at 3B is looming very large.

Melton is in to start the bottom of the 8th.
