Today's lineup vs. 23-year-old rookie lefty Connelly Early who has a 1.88 ERA in 3 major league starts.   Early is the Red Sox #6 prospect.
He was recently called up to replace the injured Dustin May.  Early doesn't have an overpowering fastball.  He's regarded more as a future #4/#5 starter.
So I predict he'll strike out at least 10 Tigers.

  1. Jahmai Jones (R) DH
  2. Gleyber Torres (R) 2B
  3. Wenceel Pérez (S) RF
  4. Spencer Torkelson (R) 1B
  5. Riley Greene (L) LF
  6. Dillon Dingler (R) C
  7. Andy Ibáñez (R) 3B
  8. Javier Báez (R) SS
  9. Parker Meadows (L) CF

Why is Perez still batting 3rd?

Keider Montero starting for the Tigers.  Montero could get destroyed in Fenway.

Sure enough, Jones leads off with a single and is left stranded as Torres and Perez both struck out swinging on curveballs, and Tork popped out.

Looking forward to that lead off home run over the Green Monster from Jones and then him being replaced in the fourth inning.

Ha! I just typed that Jones would get a lead off hit, not having checked the game yet. Was hoping for the homer :-)

Early is throwing his fastball 95-96 mph so maybe he's got more of a fastball than the scouting reports say.

A solo homer is almost the only way the Tigers can score.  Forget them putting together a string of hits.

Jones will still get pulled when the Sox bring in a righty.  Count on it.

Likes like another strike out fest.

Early has already struck out 3 of the Tigers' first 5 hitters.  Greene struck out again in the 2nd.  He now has 201 on the season.  He's shattering the Tigers' single-season K record.  Riley thinks the strike outs "don't matter" and it "is what it is" that he strikes out so much.

Montero gave up a single to Abreu in the 1st but struck out the other 3 hitters.

STOP STRIKING OUT!  Ibanez strikes out as well in the 2nd.  That's 4 Ks for Early in 2 innings.

What are the Tigers' hitting coaches teaching?  The "control the zone" philosophy seems to have completely gone out the window.  They all seem to be following Javy Baez's philosophy.

Why no Malloy against a lefty who was in AAA recently?  Malloy was beating up on pitchers in AAA.

Honestly, I would bench Greene against lefties.

Perez has no business starting now. You could argue Greene doesn’t either against a lefty. Malloy is hot. Garbage lineup.

Javy Baez saves Montero's butt in the 2nd with a great diving catch on a sinking blooper to LF to end the inning with 2 runners on.

Montero also got lucky in the 3rd as Torres caught a 112-mph scorcher off the bat of Yoshida to end the inning.

Sox lead 1-0 after 3.

Tigers have struck out 5 times vs. Early through 3.  Meadows struck out in the 3rd.  So Early is half way there to 10.

It sucks that the Tigers have to start Meadows against a lefty but honestly they need Baez at SS and Meadows in CF for defense.  The rest of the lineup needs to produce to cover for them.

Hinch doesn't like Jones's defense in the outfield so he starts him at DH and benches Malloy.  I'd rather sacrifice some defense for offense at this point.
Put Jones in LF for Greene against a lefty and start Malloy at DH.  Not starting the righty Malloy against a lefty rookie in Fenway Park is idiotic.

Another strikeout for Early in the 4th.  Torres took a totally hittable fastball over the heart of the plate for strike 3.  Sigh.
Perez also got a meatball over the plate and hit a mediocre flyball to CF.

I actually think you could combine Toledo and Erie's lineups and they'd do better than the Tigers.

Sox lead 1-0 after 4.
It's a strikeout fest for both teams.  Montero has 6 Ks and Early has 7 Ks through 4.1 innings.  The Sox have to be frustrated because they've had some chances to beat up on Montero but he's pitched out of jams thanks to some good defense by the Tigers.

By the way, that Rafaela guy on the Sox is becoming very annoying in a Steven Kwan way.  He's hitting .375 vs. the Tigers this year.

Malloy at least can hit lefties but he's buried on the bench.

Jones came through with a 2-run single!  Tigers lead 2-1 in the 5th.  Torres is up.

Jones is our most reliable hitter.  And Hinch will still take him out if the Sox bring in a righty later.

Torres got a hanging curve over the plate but flied out meekly to CF to end the inning.  At least we actually got 2 runs for a change.

I don't know how much longer we can go with Montero.  He's allowed quite a bit of base traffic so far.

Oh boy, Montero being lifted for Hurter after striking out the leadoff man in the bottom of the 5th.  Hang on to your hats...it's bullpen time for 4+ innings.

Nice job from Montero.  His defense helped him out a lot, but he had 7 Ks and 0 walks in 4.1 IP.  At least he didn't walk himself into trouble.

The Sox brought in rookie lefty Payton Tolle to start the 6th.  Perez singled to lead off the inning.  Tork strikes out and Greene grounds into a DP.  Tork had a meatball 91-mph fastball on the first pitch and he swung and missed at it.  Tork struck out on a slider outside the plate.  Awful hitting.

Hurter is still in to start the bottom of the 6th.  Is Hinch pressing his luck?

Now the Tigers need some insurance runs. Mr. stating the obvious here.

Hurter really botched a surefire double play by not covering 1st base.  He just stood there like a house by the side of the road and didn't even budge towards 1st base.  Weird.  Glad that didn't come back to haunt us.

Good day for the Monteros today.  Rafael allowed a 1-out single in the 7th but got a force out and then Holton came in to strike out Hamilton.

Tigers lead 2-1 in the top of the 8th.  Jones, Torres and Perez due up.  Can we please get some BISN?

Finnegan then Vest, or Vest then Finnegan?

Hinch pushing the right buttons with the bullpen today so far.  Holton faces 3 lefties in the 8th and gets them all out.  Holton struck out the last hitter in the 7th as well.  Perez with an excellent catch to save Holton for the 2nd out.

Tork, Greene and Dingler due up in the top of the 9th.  Not expecting much.

Finnegan or Vest in the 9th?

Finnegan has pitched two games in a row, including blowing the lead last night. It’s definitely going to be Vest in the traditional 9th inning closing role.

Tigers have two runners on now in the 9th but two outs.

Javy strikes out on 3 straight pitches out of the zone to leave 2 runners stranded in the top of the 9th.  Pathetic but predictable.

Vest with a 1-2-3 no-drama inning for the save.
Tigers are in the playoffs and Skubal should get a rest tomorrow so he can pitch in game 1 of the playoffs.
I don't care about trying to win the division if Cleveland loses tonight, just rest Skubal.

Great job by the pitchers and defense today.  The offense still gets an "F" except for Jones.

Javy's great catch saved the season and Perez's sliding catch in RF also prevented things from getting very scary.

His last 2 at-bats became increasingly bad, but he did have a good at-bat in the 5th.  He actually laid off a couple of way outside pitches and then drove a low and in pitch for a single to keep the inning going (Meadows then walked and Jones hit the 2-run 2-out single).

His last at-bat in the 9th was vintage undisciplined Baez.  He went up there only one thought of hacking at every pitch and struck out on 3 pitches out of the zone.  He got blown away by a 96-mph fastball up in the zone.
