So Valencia gets a start behind the plate post-Rogers.  We'll see how many times the O's try to steal on him.

Welcome back, Javy Baez.  You know we're desperate when we're happy Baez is in the lineup with his .678 OPS and -0.6 WAR.

Troy Melton (1.95 ERA in 10 starts) is on the mound for the Tigers.  Melton has had some control issues (8 walks) in his last 2 starts but he's still limiting the damage.  He's probably due for some regression, though.  Hard to keep an ERA below 2.

The Baez/Valencia Affect: The Tigers scored at least one run in every inning they batted tonight.  Crazy!

They also became the only team since 1935 to score runs in every inning they batted and shut out their opponent.

Not much pressure on Melton and Valencia because of the massive offensive support, but Valencia certainly did fine behind the plate tonight.  The O's didn't attempt any stolen bases since they were behind big early.  🙂

I don't really know what Valencia's supposed defensive weaknesses are besides his arm not being very good.  Is he bad at blocking pitches?  Does he lot of pitches get by him? Is he bad at framing? Does he not work well with pitchers?  From what I've read, he worked hard to learn each pitcher's strengths and weaknesses in the minors.

It could just be Nichols Law with Valencia.

I was rooting for the Tigers to score in every inning. And they did. I think another team did that this year already. Because it was a home game for the Tigers, that only meant scoring in 8 innings (unless 14 runs was not enough insurance)

What a game!  I don’t recall ever seeing a team score in all 9 innings, or the Tigers score in all 8. 

 Have the Tigers done it before?

And, with the standard of the old Randy Smith teams of a seven run win being a Thumping, this was a Double Thumping.  And a shutout to boot.  Don’t see that every day.

On the radio broadcast, I think they said the only other time in team history was in 2014. Dan Dickerson then said something else about the team’s 125-year history, but I was driving and didn’t hear if he mentioned another time they did it.

Jason is referring to the frequency of a 14-0 win, I think Dave was talking about the frequency of scoring in every inning, which is what I was asking about.  

On August 2nd 2014, the Tigers also scored in all eight innings of a home game.  Miggy, V-Mart, and JD all homered in that game, while Alex Avila hit 2 doubles.

Have the Tigers ever scored in all nine innings?

some minor poking around and that short list might be because one other time the game was only a 6 inning game (in the 1930s I think) so maybe a stretch to include that.
