At the end of April 2024, Riley Greene had 23 walks and an 18% walk rate.  As I recall, he was leading the league in walks at the time.

Through the all-star break in 2025, he has 27 walks and a 6.8% walk rate.  That rate is 51st of the 69 qualified players in the league.

I can't remember anybody ever being really good at drawing walks and later becoming fairly bad at it. It seems pretty odd.  Maybe was just a small sample fluke in 2024?

It does hint at some upside potential for Greene.  Perhaps, as he matures, he may be able to use his selectivity again, and improve his efficiency.  Especially has putchers start to be very cautious with him due to his blossoming power.

Greene has sold out for more power this season by being more aggressive with his huge uppercut swing, which leads to more homers but also more strikeouts and fewer walks.  His OBA is slightly below league average at .335 and lower than his previous 2 seasons.

You can't argue with the overall results as he has increased his home run rate, SLG and isolated power this year while still maintaining a decent batting average and good OPS.  I'm still amazed that Greene has maintained a .280-.300 batting average despite all the swing and miss.
I think Greene is still trying to find a balance between being more aggressive with his swing but also being patient.  He hasn't quite found the balance yet, but he's a talented enough hitter who has a history of having decent walk rates, so he could find that balance in the future.
