Today's Lineup vs. The Royals (7/25)

This afternoon's lineup vs. righty Michael Wacha (3.66 ERA in 20 starts).  Wacha and his breaking and offspeed stuff usually gives the Tigers fits.  He has 11 quality starts in 12 career starts vs. the Tigers.  He pitched 7 shutout, 2-hit innings against the Tigers in May (of course, that was when everyone was shutting out the Tigers).

3. Gleyber Torres (R) 2B
4. Kerry Carpenter (L) DH
5. Riley Greene (L) LF
6. Hao-Yu Lee (R) 3B
7. Zach McKinstry (L) RF
8. Matt Vierling (R) CF
9. Jake Rogers (R) C

Tork gets the day off.  Probably a good idea against Wacha. 

Casey Mize (2.79 ERA in 15 starts) on the mound for the Tigers.  Mize had to leave his last start early after being struck by a ball, but he also said he was experiencing groin tightness, which has plagued him all season. 

Not optimistic about this one because of our track record vs. Wacha and Mize possibly not being 100%.   Fingers crossed.

Why does Hinch insist on batting Greene in the middle third of the order? I don’t get it. Maybe Greene hasn’t hit Wacha well in his career and Carp has, but I’d go with how they’ve done this season.

Taking Ding and Tork out of the lineup together really reduces the amount of power potential. I just don’t have a good feeling about this lineup being able to string together enough hits to manufacture runs.

Predictably, the Tigers are in yet another low-scoring game with the Royals.  Tied 2-2 after 7. Wacha is still in there.

Mize allowed 1 run on 3 hits and 0 walks in 6 IP so he did fine.  Finnegan allowed the game-tying solo homer to Sal Perez in top of the 7th.  Sigh.

Lee stays hot with a homer and a double.

The bottom 3^rd of the Tigers' lineup is a combined 0-9.  Tigers are 1-9 with RISP today. Same old, same old.

It's like pulling teeth getting this lineup to score runs.

Having the 7-9 hitters all with sub .600 OPS makes it damn near impossible to score many runs or to keep a rally going. That is on AJ.

Say igersbahs first and third with one out hit then couldn’t even hit a ball out of the infield. Vierling tried to bunt in the tying run (I was good with the decision) but it was foul then he k’d. PH Tork popped out to end it. 

Annoying that we had Lange on the ropes and then he wriggled out of it. But, we’ve won a few of these types of games lately. Not much you can do when the offense isn’t consistent; too much for the pitching staff to overcome.

Lee struck out after Greene led off the 9^th with a single, but Lee had a good game.  Can't blame him for 1-11 with RISP.

Ready to move on from Vierling.  He provides little value.  As bad as he is, at least Outman can launch one over the fence occasionally. 

I'd like to see Malgeri get more playing time and bring back Valencia (or call up Max Anderson), but really there's not much you can do to squeeze offense out of this lineup.  Tork and Carpenter just don't cut it.

Tonight the White Sox lost to the Astros, Guardians lost to the Rays, and Twins beat the A's.

So it looks like today's loss won't hurt too much in terms of the standings.  Nevertheless, it was still a blown opportunity by the Tigers and yet another 1-run late-inning loss.  You can blame the bullpen, but the offense was the main culprit.
