Welcome to Decentralized Development Tools Google Group!

This group was created in follow-up to a mail-thread which I started in August 2016 in belated response to conversations I had while attending OSCON in Austin, TX in May 2016, where I first met Sid, the CEO of Gitlab, and asked whether they had IPFS/Swarm integration on their roadmap.   I was delighted to learn that I was not off in left-field with such a question!

Periodically within the Ethereum development community the question has been asked "If decentralization is so important to you, why are you using completely centralized software yourselves?"    Prime examples of that are GitHub, Reddit, YouTube, Gitter, Slack, Skype, TravisCI, Appveyor and more.     To this point, the answer has been easy enough "There are no decentralized alternatives available.   We are building the lower layers which will allow such tools to be built in the future."

Well, it looks like that that future is starting to arrive.    Since first speaking to Sid (CEO of Gitlab) in May, there has been significant progress on IPFS and on Swarm.   There is a live testnet for Swarm.  IPFS have announced that they will be building their incentive mechanism (Filecoin) on top of Ethereum.   Nick Johnson has made good progress on the Ethereum Naming Service (ENS).    Alex Beregszaszi has built Mango, which can use either IPFS or Swarm as a backend storage for Git repos.   There is ongoing collaboration between the IPFS and Ethereum development teams.    Martin Becze has been working with the IPFS team on a libp2p bridge in the browser which was also demonstrated at DEVCON2.

Many of us met in person at Shanghai during DEVCON2 and the Blockchain Summit, including Brian Behlendorf of Hyperledger.

Maybe doing incremental work to start stitching Mango onto Gitlab would be a good start?   Maybe something else would make more sense?    Whatever the case, i
t feels like "go time" on starting to try building some of this higher-level tooling, which is just starting to be possible.

So - what are we going to do?  :-)   Best wishes!

PS.  Yes - we are using yet another centralized tool for this very discussion - Google Groups.    We considered a mailing list, but then somebody still has to host the mail server.    Another problem for us to solve here, perhaps.

Quick question, what is the difference between IPFS and Swarm and does there need to be both?

I would like to add  'the IPFS & libp2p <3 Ethereum - Roadmap' It has links to all of the IPFS/ethereum interop work (yay libp2p bridge with webrtc mesh!)

Hey Justin,

This document, from Viktor (primary Swarm developer) is the most recent compare-and-contrast which I am aware of.   There have been some more concrete steps on collaboration since that was written.    Anything to add here, Viktor/Juan?

Hi,

Is there a complete demo of Mango integrated with IPFS?

I might have to read the medium post instead of the github repo :)

Sounds great,

I am working at an offline search engine, that I will hopefully launch soon - it will have full Wikipedia offline, with REAL search inside - a mini-Bing ;)

I am looking to build repository for the data, for now I am thinking to host it in GitHub.

I can help a little bit with the infrastructure, as long as it help me launch my product

Hy everyone. About ten days ago the Ryhopenetwork team currently supported within AragonNest published a usable version of a decentralized VCS

https://github.com/ryhope/pando

An article describing this protocol named Pando has recently been published here

Ultimately this protocol will make it possible to control each repository thanks to AragonOS.

Hoping that this will interest you.

Best

Alex

This is great, Alex - thanks for sharing!

BTW - HELLO EVERYONE!   I still think we should build decentralized development tools.

If 2016 was not the year for that, perhaps 2018 is?

I was at Decentralized Web Summit in SF the other week, as perhaps were some of you?  Was fantastic ...

I was not at SF during ETHS but we’re at ETH Berlin this September.

Our Tech Lead Olivier Sarrouy is a speaker with Paul Kholass on  Tuesday 11 septembre during the meetup entitled « curation market » . Olivier will present the valuation network that we will use on the top of pando to build ryhope and which we called « time-sensitive curved bounding » .

Will you be at ETH Berlin?

Good luck.  No, I won't be at ETH Berlin, but I will be at DEVCON4.

Maybe we can gather some good folk together at DEVCON4 to talk about the state of play for decentralized development tools?

We are not yet sure to be present at DEVCON4 but our tech-lead could probably make a presentation of Pando if it’s possible. Now we are implementing liquid democracy mechanisms for the collective management of repositories. This solves a whole series of problems regarding the classical GitHub workflow and also opens a whole series of questions that could certainly interest the community.

Do you think such a presentation would be possible for DEVCON4 ?

Hy,

I’am come back to you because we had an idea to organized something to DEVCON4. Indeed we gonna talk about « decentralized autonomous contents » during the blockchain week and we’ve also build a research group during this summer to create what we called a "decentralized autonomous licence" for content-DAO.

Here is the paper witch describe what we intend to create :

Maybe we can gather some folks for few hours to collectively talk about « content-DAO » and decentralized VCS during DEVCON4, what do you think ?

A small space would be enough to conduct such a discussion and we can relay the information to interested potential folks.

Best

Yes - please let's have some get together at DEVCON4!

Might be best to raise something on Twitter and/or Ethereum Magicians forum.

Hy Bob,

Step 2 of pando is online https://github.com/ryhope

Content-DAO can now choose their "governance KIT » / There is two kit actually « Dictator KIT » (GitHub workflow Like ;) but with more granularity because maintainers can set the price for a commit and so on. And « Voting KIT »  which is connected to the share of authority inside each repository and wich involve a true game a liquid democraty between the stakeholders inside the repo. There is a lot of new functions and an article is gonna arrived soon. :)

Regarding to DEVCON4 for financial reasons we can't afford the trip too much :(

But on the other hand we can organize an online discussion about Pando on the ETH magician forum. Or maybe if you find a room we can do a video intervention if you can gather interested people in one place.

Hoping that we can do something together

a topic dedicated to pando has just been created on ETH magicians.

You will find informations about this decentralized VCS  :)

Hoping that you’ll be interested

Hy Bob & all,

I just published a new article related to Pando which is entitled «  DAO & the future of content »

I also talk about the impact of pando on GitHub workflow.

Hy everyone

I come to you because we have just made an important announcement.

Indeed we just announced our candidature to Aragon Flock under the name of « Aragon Black » .

You can read the entire proposal in the link.
