Oracle connector enhancement to use binary reader

Hi All, I was wondering if there was any future enhancement to the Oracle connector to leverage the binary reader as opposed to log mining.  The reason being I believe log mining is not possible after Oracle 19.  Any insight would be greatly appreciated!

Hi Jeff,

While we do intend to evaluate other options, Oracle LogMiner is still very much possible with both Oracle 19 and Oracle 21.  The only Oracle LogMiner feature that was discontinued after Oracle 12 was the continuous mining option, but the Debezium Oracle connector has never relied on this option and is capable of capturing changes without that LogMiner option.

Hey Jeff,

Could you clarify what exactly you are referring to by "the binary reader"? We're definitely open to exploring alternative means of ingesting changes besides LogMiner, if possible anyhow.

Binary reader term looks to be something coined from AWS. Basically instead of using Logminer having a process read / parse the redo logs without it. The potential issues with LogMiner are that it could affect DB system performance.

Hi Jeff,

So there is one binary parser we are aware of and we've been in contact with the author and collaborated on the gaps we've found between what we currently support and the reader.  The author has been actively working on closing those gaps, but if you are aware of or have any suggestions on a specific open source implementation that we should explore, we'd be welcome to take a look or offer our feedback on it.

That said, there are a plethora of tuning knobs, both in Debezium and on Oracle to help avoid performance concerns, but we are also open to looking at other ingestion options if you have suggestions.
