Hello!

I have noticed that the simulation results depend on how the mesh is constructed if the FE_Nedelec finite elements are used. I have described my experience with mesh orientation in section “Distortion nr. 3” on this page:

https://www.cembooks.nl/logbook1/page_distortions.html

I strongly suspect this has something to do with the warning message in the documentation of the FE_Nedelec finite elements. I quote:

“Several aspects of the implementation are experimental. For the moment, it is safe to use the element on globally refined meshes with consistent orientation of faces. See the todo entries below for more detailed caveats.”

Is somebody dealing with this problem? How do I orient the faces consistently? Are there any guidelines on how to check and fix orientations of the faces? Is it always possible to orient the faces consistently?

Hi Siarhei,

I believe that this questions that you pose at the end of your post are most simply answered by pointing you towards the FE_NedelecSZ class. In the introduction to that class you will find information about how it's implementation overcomes the orientation issue for edge and face-based basis functions.

I hope that this helps.

Best,
Jean-Paul
