All:

Here is some draft text for the DDI Newsletter.

Although I mentioned the combined Tools group here, I will also write a separate piece about the implementation of DDI-CDI (and other DDI specs) in CDIF, and that will talk more about tools.

Cheers,

Arofan

Headline: DDI-CDI to Release DDI-CDI Version 1.1 Beta

The DDI-CDI WG will be producing a version 1.1 Beta of DDI-CDI over the course of the spring. The new version of the specification is the result of implementations over the past year in several projects, including the CDIF4XAS project in the X-Ray Absorption Spectroscopy domain, work in the Cross-Domain Interoperability Framework (CDIF), and elsewhere. This beta does not include any major new features, but provides a series of bug fixes and simplifications, notably around the ability to describe text-based wide and long data files in a more succinct fashion. Additionally, a mechanism for describing data coming from binary formats such as NetCDF and Parquet has been added, to supplement the description of text-based data files.

The DDI-CDI Tools subgroup has joined forces with developers from several other projects and institutions in a group administered through the CDIF WG. This involves members from Sikt, CODATA, UKDA, and several other institutions implementing DDI-CDI and other related standards. This work has been an important source of input for the new release.

Organization of the formal review of the 1.1 Beta release through the Technical Committee is expected to begin in April, so please look there for further announcements. For informal use, the new version can be found on the DDI-CDI GitHub at ______________________. Implementers are encouraged to watch the GitHub for revisions, but it is expected that a stable pre-release version will be made available once the official review is complete.

The next major release of DDI-CDI will incorporate the work on combined description of qualitative and quantitative data, and it is possible that all of these changes (including the 1.1 Beta fixes) will be rolled into a single major release. The decision as to when the 1.1 Beta features will be officially published has not yet been decided, pending review.

Any questions should be directed to the DDI-CDI WG at ddi...@googlegroups.com.

You may want to provide a wider window for the start of the TC directed review. You don't plan to be done before late April and TC will need some time to set this up.

Wendy:

Can I say "April or May"?

Cheers,

Arofan

Yes...that gives a bit of wiggle room. Thanks
