Guys,

The demise of winch launching is coming faster than some wish.  Recent winch contests have drawn minimal participation and therefore it might be time to turn the page to all electric.  In order for the club to thrive in that format we need to fully embrace the Gliderscore program and its features.  Gliderscore is a very powerful program and subsequently has a steep learning curve.  The website has instructions for its operation and Jay Watkins has developed a training type guide.  Future club CD”s will need to learn this program and we solicit individuals to step up to this task.

The original plan for the Fall Roundup in Muncie had been for mixed launch.  A proposal has been made to change that to an all-electric contest.  We could choose from the ALES, F5J Lite, and F5J formats.  We solicit inputs from you on this topic.

The club owns 6 winches and eventually we will need to disburse them.  If you are currently a club member and wish to permanently own a winch let us know.  Any ideas regarding the remaining equipment please speak up.

Electric sailplanes represent a growing part of the hobby and the club will have a bright future endorsing that discipline.    Let us know your thoughts.

I will happily participate in any format that is ultimately put forward.  F5J lite might be a good choice.  Guys with ALES cut offs can participate and do well and get a feel for the event.  The seasoned F5J guys can still make the tough decisions about launch height with the resulting rewards and penalties.

Thanks for your efforts.

Barry

I would say keep the formats as they are set for this season. With the only change being that all winch launched planes will have a Ron Mong cutout as their target for their Landing points. If you do decide to make a change I think F5J lite would be a good choice.

Hi Guys,

I don’t have a winch-able airplane so my opinion is a little one sided but I vote for F5J Lite.

For me, getting back into the hobby, F5j lite is perfect, but I will support whatever is best!

Like Chip, I'm just getting back into the hobby.  I have no electric gliders as of yet, so I will put in a bid to be one of the people with a winch.  That will enable me to practice with my winch launch gliders until I get electric gliders for competition.

OBTW, I enjoyed hanging out with y'all at last Saturday's contest.  I learned a lot about what to look for in an electric glider and got to reacquaint myself with some of the folks I knew from 12 or so years ago when I flew with the DARTS, and I got to meet a bunch of new people that I'll soon get to fly with!

It's nice to be back!

Best regards,

Norm -
This is a tough question that has been raised a couple of times during our meetings, at the field and a multitude of times in online forums. I think there is a place for string launch planes in the hobby, one could argue that it is the pure form of gliding. However,  I am not sure it is in the best interest in promoting new people into the sport, or as a viable competition going forward.  With that neither is full F5J where it's a show of who can afford the latest and greatest carbon slippers every season.   I believe ALES, F5J lite and F3RES would open up more options for more people to participate. F5J tour events are a fantastic method and option for those that want to push their skills to that level. But on the club level, F5J Lite seems like the best of both worlds.

If there is enough interest, why not add a couple of F3RES events to the OVSS calendar next year? Its a much lower cost of entry, seems as like an active segment of the hobby that could draw more interest and would still allow for the the string launched events.

Just my $0.02

Kind regards,
