Hi everyone,

I am currently working with Dataverse version 6.5 and would like to implement a custom DOI shoulder for a specific dataverse within our installation. My goal is to assign a unique DOI prefix for that particular dataverse, allowing us to manage DOIs under a dedicated namespace that differs from the global shoulder configured on the server.

Could you please advise on the best practices or recommended methods to achieve this? Specifically:

  • Is it possible to configure a custom DOI shoulder on a per-dataverse basis in version 6.5?

  • If so, is there an API endpoint or configuration file setting that supports this?

  • Are there any known limitations or considerations for implementing this feature?

Thank you very much in advance for your assistance. I look forward to your guidance.

Best regards,

Lynette

Lynette,
Yes, Dataverse can be configured to have different PID providers (or the same provider but different authority and/or shoulder) on a per-dataverse or even per-dataset. You should look at how to set up multiple PID providers at https://guides.dataverse.org/en/latest/installation/config.html#persistent-identifiers-and-publishing-datasets. Once you have a second provider configured using a different shoulder, superusers can use the UI (dataverse page/edit/general info) to change the PID provider per dataverse/collection. Any datasets/files created after the change should use the new shoulder. Per-dataset changes can be made via API - see https://guides.dataverse.org/en/latest/api/native-api.html#configure-the-pid-generator-a-dataset-uses-if-enabled.

So, if I wanted to use another shoulder for a specific Dataverse, but still keep DataCite as the PID provider, would I need to configure it as a new provider with the same authority but a different shoulder?
