Hello everyone,

There is interest from the DDI and Dataverse communities to start a DDI Working Group looking at enhanced DDI support in Dataverse. Over the coming weeks we will be setting up a call and WG space for gathering ideas and use cases for discussion and integration in future iterations of the Dataverse.

Some specific discussion areas for the group:
  • DDI use cases (for researchers, libraries / archives, data managers, AND, discovery, visualization, preservation, reuse, etc.)
  • DDI workflows (upload support and reuse/exchange between other systems, editing and creating metadata, API support, etc.)
  • DDI Codebook and Lifecycle support
  • DDI Controlled vocabularies
Hope to speak to you soon, feel free to respond to this thread with any interest.

Best,
Amber

Amber - thanks for making this initial post. As I mentioned on the community call last week, we're excited to support this effort!

Amber,

This is a fantastic idea, and I'm fully supportive too.

Here is what I think that could be useful to form the working group:

- Have a well defined goal to complete in the first 3 months:
--- it would be great if the output of the first goal is presented in the Dataverse community.
--- An example of the output of a goal could be a requirements docs and user stories for a particular feature that extends DDI support in Dataverse.

- The working group should have one (or two) leads that organize the calls, the agenda, and move the goal forward. I assume you will be the lead, right?

- It would be good to have notes on the working group discussions in a google doc (or similar) to be easily shareable with the rest of the Dataverse community,

- It would be good to invite at least one (or two) folks from DDI community (not working on Dataverse necessarily) to participate, and provide input from another perspective. Perhaps there could one person from the DDI controlled vocab group and another from the DDI dev group: http://www.ddialliance.org/community/working-groups

How does this sound? Could you think of what would be high-priority or useful as the first 3 months goal?

Merce

Thanks Merce, I'm very happy to help coordinate this initiative with Danny and Julian.

Our initial discussions about the WG on the Dataverse Community Call was to make this as open as possible for the Dataverse community, as a joint WG. We are off to a great start, many have come forward from the DDI community including some that are already using Dataverse and others who are investigating Dataverse as a repository option.

Identifying use cases with the community is our first priority, I think. We will certainly aim to share this information with the larger Dataverse community via calls, wiki space, etc., and a presentation of the use cases at the Community Meeting sounds very helpful.

I really like your idea to put forward some goals and map out a 3-month plan, let's see how the WG evolves with this in mind.

Stay tuned,
Amber

Update:

The WG had it's first call! Check out the discussions from our wiki space:

Next, the group will take a closer look at Use Cases and flesh out priorities with the Dataverse team.

Best,
Amber
