How can you configure the name of the dataverse to be shown in a dataset reference of a dataset that is in a sub dataverse?

I have noticed that in some Dataverse installations the name of the sub dataverse is used in the dataset reference, e.g. "University of Virginia Dataverse" in http://dx.doi.org/10.18130/V3/NEPGOL, while in other dataset also placed in sub dataverses, the name of the root dataverse i used, e.g. "Harvard Dataverse" http://dx.doi.org/10.7910/DVN/BXXWWW.

We would also like the sub dataverse name to be shown in references instead of the root dataverse name, but I could not figure out how to configure this.

Best,
Philipp

Hey Philipp,

I believe this is covered by this Github issue:

https://github.com/IQSS/dataverse/issues/3611

Feel free to leave comments and move discussion to that issue - this is something that's slated for the 4.7 release.

Thanks,

Danny

Philipp,

I'm a little confused at what you're asking. In that first example, that dataset is not stored in a sub-dataverse but in the root dataverse of the UVA Dataverse (installation). In other words, the citation is showing the root Dataverse.

Or am I missing something?

Thank you all for your answers! I have had a look at the related issues. As someone mentioned earlier, for multi-institutional installations it is quite essential to be able to display the sub-dataverse name in the dataset reference. We are now running a multi-institutional test installation. In addition we have one operative thematic sub-dataverse. So, I hope that this is what is meant by "Customizable dataverse names" in the 4.7 point on the roadmap.

Best,
Philipp

Hi Philipp,

The "Customizable dataverse names" issue slated for 4.7 is about Dataverse installations and dataverses within those installations having more control over their names, and not about what information should be displayed in dataset references/citations.

The discussions Phil linked to are more related to your question, particularly the Google Groups discussion I think. Also, this issue I think is more about the use cases you've brought up: https://github.com/IQSS/dataverse/issues/2297, which accounts for the fact that the root dataverse (the repository) has to be in the citation, but suggests some ways to allow dataverse owners to decide "whether the citation should display distributor/producer in addition to repository."

You're welcome!

Phillip, you mentioned a thematic dataverse. Did you have the TROLLing Dataverse in mind? And would your installation like "TROLLing Dataverse" in the citation (in addition to "UiT Open Research Data Dataverse")? I noticed that datasets in the UiT installation don't have values in the producer or distributor metadata fields (which aren't mandatory by default), so if the solution suggested in the issue I linked to were to make it easy for dataverse creators to say "I want what's in the repository or producer field to also be in the citation of each dataset in this dataverse," than TROLLing Dataverse would have to be in either metadata field, maybe using dataset templates to pre-populate those fields for every dataset created in that dataverse.

Sorry for the confusion! I meant that the Sub-Dataverse name should be displayed in the dataset citation.

If understand you right, the Dataverse name in the citation has always to be the name of the root dataverse, but that one in addition can display the distributor or producer name? I have tried to achieve this in our test dataverse by adding TROLLing (= sub-dataverse) in the metadata field distributor instead of UiT Open Research Data, and I also tried to put in the producer field, but the dataverse name in the dataset citation is still UiT Open Research Data (= root dataverse). So, I don't know how to achieve this.

As I mentioned, ideally, we would like to display the sub-dataverse name in the dataset citation, and not the root dataverse name. If this is not possible, we would like the information in the distributor field to be displayed. However, it seems somewhat weird to display both the root dataverse name and the distributor name. In the TROLLing case, this would look like this:

TROLLing Dataverse, UiT Open Research Data Dataverse

I don't think we would like the producer to be displayed in the reference. I have not discussed this with my colleagues, but I think this would make the reference quite long, e.g.

Université de Lille 3, TROLLing Dataverse, UiT Open Research Data Dataverse

I hope I didn't confuse you even more!

Best,
Philipp

P.S.: We are currently establishing an RDA interest group for linguistic data together with researchers from America and Asia, aiming at establishing standards for citing research data within linguistics.

Ah, no worries. It actually looks like I introduced some confusion by suggesting that values in producer or distributor fields would show up in the reference/citation. As you saw, this isn't the case now, but I was curious if the suggestion would work for UiT or why it wouldn't, which I think you've addressed.

You're right that the root Dataverse named in the citation couldn't be replaced by something else, since what needs to be in the citation is the root Dataverse that guarantees some form of access to the data (number 2 in the Data Citation Principles Dataverse follows). But others share the responsibility, and giving credit is also very important.

It's interesting that before 4.0, Dataverse used to produce citations with certain field attributes in brackets. You can see this with datasets (studies) in pre-4.0 installations:

Sreejith Aravindakshan; Timothy Joseph Krupnik, 2016, "Survey to assess the impact of multi-level factors of change on farm trajectories in Southern Bangladesh", http://hdl.handle.net/11529/10898 International Maize and Wheat Improvement Center;International Rice Research Institute;International Food Policy Research Institute [Distributor] V2 [Version]

I bring this up because it was an effort to make it clear what each part of a citation is, and to standardize it. Right now the intent behind dataverse names could be anything (like article title, distributor, theme, institution, research lab). If there were similar brackets in the post 4.0 dataset citations in the TROLLing dataverse:

... TROLLing Dataverse, UiT Open Research Data Dataverse ...

I'm thinking [repository] would follow UiT Open Research Data Dataverse. What would go after TROLLing Dataverse? And would that be the best indication of who's responsible for access to the data and/or who gets credit for it? Why wouldn't producer be a good idea?

I agree about not wanting a longer citation. If parts are added to it, it becomes less clear what those parts mean.

Thanks for mentioning the new RDA interest group! I'd find it interesting to see what's important for particular domains.

You're welcome!
