Everyone,

I know several in the community are working on multi-language support and it looks like Odum is now poised to enter that area as well.

I recall a community group meeting where a group was formed to begin exploring collaborations around this area. I would be interested in learning from your experiences and hopefully adding to the conversation and code.

I know that Scholars Portal and Fudan University have made wonderful progress in this area.

We have a project that is interested in creating an Arabic version of the Dataverse.

This brings up several issues not to mention task of Right to Left Text.

We will be curating some data that is in Arabic and interested in not only the language conversions but also the potential issues with metadata generation with Arabic text in the variables.

We are very excited about this and would love to talk about paths forward and doing this in a community fashion so we all can benefit for the development.

Please let me know if you would like to touch base and discuss projects such as this.

Hi Jonathan,

I am interested in tracking progress on this project. I work at the Abdul Latif Jameel Poverty Action Lab. We regularly have datasets that are collecting data in other languages, and a lot in Hindi. We probably wouldn't be so much interested in creating a new dataverse for different languages, but I would be interested to know how you are deal with different metadata.

Regards,
James

In case anyone missed Danny's email from earlier today, the plan is to talk about internationalization during the community call tomorrow (Tuesday): https://groups.google.com/d/msg/dataverse-community/d7BnFiRA3_I/ggFynEZvBwAJ

Jon, you have a good memory! I see there was a "Introduction to Dataverse Working Groups" email sent a year and a half ago at https://groups.google.com/d/msg/dataverse-community/DXCjIJwwfwU/COxwj-guDAAJ

That resulted in a "dataverse-internationalization-wg" mailing list being announced at https://groups.google.com/d/msg/dataverse-community/W2LoxZdB6ao/BSngL1qRDAAJ

That mailing list has been pretty quiet, though.

It'll be good to hear everyone's latest thoughts.

Thanks,

Phil
